Entry Step - bubblerboy64 - 07-14-2007 13:13
My entry step is not functioning. Previous owner just left it hang out
which gave me the willies. I temporarily tied it back with some wire.
I'd like to get it working. It looks like I am going to have to
replace a bunch of stuff even the steps themselves possibly. Is this
stuff all bluebird parts or are there other sources for what I will
need? Just need pointed in the right direction.

I am not familiar with the step mechanism on a 73, But there is a
troubleshooting guide in the files for a later model, this may help.

John,
The diagrams and directions refer to a "safaety tape." It is pressure
sensitive and under the door frame. It is probaly shorted out. It is
is a safety measure so that your foot does not get crushed when the
step retracts, if you are on the step. In reality it does not seem
necessary since it is impossible to shut the door while you are on the
step! The strip is black and yellow striped and at one end (right?)
are two wires. You can cut them and that may fix the problem. If not
you can look elsewhere, but I suspect this will solve the problem. I
learned this trick at a RIV a few years ago. One of the BB service
techs told me about it.

don't have much of anything under that step. No mechanism or
valves.It appears that most parts are missing so my question is more
basic. I have what is an obvious switch on the inside door jam and
the steps them selves but I basically am going to have to start over
getting the air and electral components. Looks like a job for the
professionals. I just was wondering if this is all BB stuff or if
other coaches have similar? Don't think I am up to all that is
involved with this one.

On our 77 pretty basic also it is wired to a 4 way valve
push the door button in step goes up let the button out step comes out
speed regulation is done on the valve itself by way of controlling the
speed of the air exhausting
It has no micro or mercury switches just the valve
the only caveat is as with all other bird steps don't be too close when
the step comes out it will knock you on your butt
look for the wiring on your on the inside wall of the generator bay
there should be a ice cube relay thats where to start
if you plan it it out and ask questions here and proceed with
moderation you will be able to do it yourself
All the parts are available from various sources
Randy Dupree has a line on the ram and the valve the relay is
available at a good supply house potter and bromfeld ice cube double
ice cube

I had to put a different switch on my Newell because of a new step installation.
And replacing the plunge switch in the door jamb with the newere magnetic switch
at the bottom was nice improvement. Only thing..it was stuck on with double
stick tape..came off..but I found it before it was too late and superglued it
back on. If you want the original BB air-actuated step, the magnetic quick-ee

One thing I didn't look at was the step on the BB that Tom Eastman is
parting out. That might be an option if it wasn't damaged in the accident.

I had excellent luck with my Kwikee step but it replaced a similar electric step
instead of air-operated as in BB's. I think the whole installation was about

Bubble Boy have you ever thought about going to an RV Salvage yard
to look for some used steps and operational gear? I was just
thinking about your problem and this could be a fair and reasonable
way to get your steps up and working. We have one large RV Recycling
yard that I know of up here in Washington and that one I think is in
Rochester. Well anyway just a thought as I know if your like me than
money doesn't grow on trees. Jon
