Microwave oven - Gus - 08-27-2008 14:35

My Sharp microwave convection oven has quit working. I
removed it today to see if it can be fixed. Does anyone have any info
regarding fixing vs buying a new one? If new is the way to go, does
anyone have any knowledge what brand has served them well or what brand to stay
away from.

All information is appreciated.

Gus,

We replaced our original unit last year. My wife and I still wish we would have spent the time/$$$ to get the old one repaired...assuming it could be repaired. We liked the old one because you set the power/time and it took off doing what you wanted. The new unit requires a Dr. Degree in idiot proofing in order to get it to do the same thing. The wife is learning...I've learned to turn off all the KNOW_IT_ALL_FEATURES and and just push BEVERAGE to heat up a cup of coffee...a KNOW_IT_ALL FEATURE for sure.

New convection ovens are far more efficient than the older models. I replaced my Sharp with a new Sharp stainless version. Works great. Fit right in there.

Leroy,

Do you get a smell from your unit like it's over heating? What is the time delay between convection cooking and microwave use?

Curt:
I have not smelled anything weird. I have no clue how to operate the thing; just reporting what the War department tells me. She loves the thing and the food is good. She says it is ten times better than the old one. I don't drink coffee and I cook over wood, with beer, lol.
I will ask the wife about any delay and report back. She has that thing figured out..

Microwave oven - Morey Zuber - 08-27-2008 15:52

We replaced our Sharp with a GE Advantium 120 from Lowes including
installation. They delivered new one, removed and took old, and
installed new very professionaly. Margaret loves the new, it has
electronic menus, quartz browning, operates as a conventional oven.

We've had it almost a year now and are very happy with it.

Gus,

Our original Sharp died last month and we replaced it with a new Sharp
Convection Microwave (R9-30 AK).

The old one had only 600 Watt microwave power. The new one is 900 Watts. I think
the
convection function is also more powerful. Although it takes a little reading
to figure it
out, some of the auto sensing features are real convenient. Its easy to bypass
this and
use it manually as well.

It comes with good documentation and a nice cook book too.
As Leroy pointed out it is pretty much the same size as the old one with the
exception of
the height. The new one is about 3/4" shorter so the trim piece needs to be
modified.
Not a big deal.

I thought about having the old one repaired but I could not see spending money
on an
appliance that is over 20 years old. The new one (black), ran about $422 and
it took a
couple of hours to install.

Curt. The time delay between convection and microwave use is the time to cool the oven. There is no delay between microwave and convection use. That according to the wife.

Microwave oven - luckyron1 - 08-27-2008 23:55

We replaced our Sharp micro/convection with another Sharp
micro/convection last spring. Sharp still makes 'em the same size so
remodeling was not needed. The majority seems to feel that repairing
isn't cost-effective.

Microwave oven - Stephen Hare - 08-28-2008 00:23

Just replaced the original Convection/Microwave (Radarange by Amana) It smelled bad,
and the 'electronic' controls hardly worked. Went to sears, and found a Kenmore Elite
Stainless Steel Micro/Convection oven. Was normally $399.00 but was on sale for $350.
Much, much better. I will appreciate and enjoy the vintage BlueBird, except when trying
to prepare dinner! Modern looks, and nice controls with a nice turntable with sensor cooking!
Hit a button to pop popcorn and re-heat plates, etc. Fits in exact space, with no cutting/modifying!
