Electric Retarder - Dan Darst - 10-21-2006 13:14 I just used 4 for a long time coming down the mountain just west of Denver on I-70. Running a 320 amp alternator. Is there any other downside to using 4 for long periods besides the amp draw? dandarst86fc35rbhuntleyil. >From: Wilhelmus Schreurs >Reply-To: WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com >To: WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com >Subject: Re: FW: [WanderlodgeForum] Re: Electric Retarder >Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2006 22:13:32 -0700 (PDT) > >The electric retarder consumes a lot of current, which drives the voltage >down. >In the manual it states that for long downgrades you can use 1 or 2, and >only use 3 and 4 for very short periods. >The current draw is about 50 amps for 1, 120 amps for 2, 250 amps for 3 and >320 amps for 4. >The amps could be a little bit different but close, so when you are using >the retarder, make sure your engine speed is up at 2000 or so, so your >alternator is putting out maximum charge. > > > >Bill 84 FC 35 SB "$quanderlodge" >Terrace, B.C. My manual states to run for no more than 5 min in #4 position to avoid the above issues and to let it cool by running at 15 mph or better with the retarder off for 5 min after a hard run. Maybe thats why the volt meter went below 12 on long downgrades- alternator was too small. Ernie Ekberg 83 PT40 Livingston, Montana [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
