Tone-and-Probe tracers are probably what you are thinking of

The guy I park next to every year in the desert at Quartzsite has one, and we
used it to trace the wiring for my driving lights, which were
extending/retracting over every bump. Since I didn't at that time have wiring
diagrams this was the next best thing.
