Bulk Oil Fill - Gregory OConnor - 12-18-2007 13:56

Bulk oil was kinda nice to have on a highway bus because after
300,000 miles the Detroits 8v92 and 6v92 two stroke engines used
oil. A Bus drivers cargo is people and the bulktank kept the driver
presentable. In the lodge the bulk oil tank is a luxury.


I think it is the rings that pass oil because in the two stroke
design the exhaust is in the piston wall. whereas in the 4stroke
(thumpers)the rings never pass obstacls. The 3208 Cats, and the
Detroit60's are four strokes.

The bulk oil filler survived onto the Series 60 ... and it's a great
convenience. My coach doesn't use much oil, so I don't often need to
add any (perhaps reflected in the 3 gal capacity of the bulk tank in
my coach). However, I still like to remain presentable -- and
besides, with the Series 60 in a pusher location, it's near-
impossible to get to the top of the engine where you'd normally put
oil in anyway -- at least not without becoming completely covered in
the dirt that inhabits the engine compartment.
