Greg, my older bird does a comfortable 35 up the mountains that I just
pulled. I try to keep her around 50, like you stated going down.

Subject: [WanderlodgeForum] Years to look for

After owning 3 Foretravel motorhomes in the last 8 years I may be

looking toward an older BlueBird.

I need to get info on years and differences.

I want a rear pusher (are the FC's louder?)

As short as possible

Able to do 80+MPH with no problems

What are problem areas I should look for on older Birds?

Thanks in advance!!!

Scott

Years to look for - Wilhelmus Schreurs - 09-29-2007 05:43

In my 1984 FC, with the 4:11 gears, I ran at just over 75 across Texas, but it
is a bear on the hills, ideally the 4:60's to 4;80's would be best IMHO.

Years to look for - bubblerboy64 - 09-29-2007 09:26

I am going to give the original poster the benefit of the doubt as to
his request for a BB capable of 85 mph. I doubt his intention
(hopefully) is to cruise at 85, he might be looking for a couch which
would be peaceful at 60 or 65. My ole 1973 is pretty happy at about
58 to 60 which is fast enough for me. I had two experience with it
recently which are related to the topic. I had occasion to pull one
of the longer and stepper grades here in Pa and she was down in 2nd
gear at about 35 mph. I was watching the water temp. and no problems
but this was a first and I was interested if not concerned. As I
crested the top of the grade I notice off to the edge with its four-
ways flashing a new looking diesel pushing sitting. I would have
stopped but figured I could be of no help assuming that the fellow
had a cell phone (who doesn't). I had two simultaneous feelings. One
of course was concern because a guy would have to be sympathetic to
anyone in that situation but I shamefully have to admit an element of
pride in my ole girl for making the hill if not quickly at least
making it with no problem. The other tail was of a similar pusher
passing me with a full sized pickup truck in tow on the Ohio Tp. I
was cruising at maybe 60mph and that guy pasted me like I was parked
so they are out there. I don't know the make or model of either of
the buses I have mentioned. I personally would not feel at all
comfortable at high speeds in a motorhome. I see people pulling
trailers at high speeds as well but you know stopping is one thing
mentioned but also how about high speed steering. Pretty scary
thought?

Years to look for - Mike Hohnstein - 09-30-2007 07:52

I concur, 12R22s use a 4.4, 11R22s a 4.6 would be a good compromise, flat lands
the 4.1 works. However, changing ratios can get costly.

In my 1984 FC, with the 4:11 gears, I ran at just over 75 across Texas, but it
is a bear on the hills, ideally the 4:60's to 4;80's would be best IMHO.

Years to look for - Ryan Wright - 09-30-2007 12:10

My 41,000lb PT-40 (475hp 8V92) will cruise at 80 all day long no
problems, engine ran nice and cool just like at any other speed. I
spent several hours flying through Nebraska with the cruise set at 80
(limit was 75, traffic was moving at 85), even hit 85 a few times. Gas
mileage for that leg of the trip dropped to 4mpg, though.

So, you can do it, even in the big rigs, but you really need the 8V92.

All that being said I don't advise it and I, personally, won't do it
again, mainly for safety reasons. I felt plenty safe at the time and
the coach was stable at those speeds but I wasn't thinking much about
tires. Maybe if I'm the only one in the coach and I'm belted up front
and really need to get somewhere fast but the thought of what could
have happened to my wife and children sitting on the couch if a tire
blew... Just not a good idea. I'm keeping the old bird between 65-70
on the freeway from now on. As a bonus I get 50% better fuel economy
at those speeds...
