RE: Has anyone here chained up there bus to go into snow or ice conditions? - Arcticdude - 11-16-2020 19:20 I've finally found somebody who's used these. His comments were they were better than nothing for soft fresh snow, but once out of that they wouldn't last very long. You might get 2 or 3 uses out of them and they'd be done. RE: Has anyone here chained up there bus to go into snow or ice conditions? - Urnie-Medie - 11-17-2020 23:19 Thanks - that will save me some time and possibly dollars. I will probably check out regular chains. Thanks Urnie RE: Has anyone here chained up there bus to go into snow or ice conditions? - Urnie-Medie - 11-25-2020 16:29 Here is what I have decided to do - talked with a friend that runs some trucks: 1- Watch the weather 2- When I get close to the area of concern I will watch the truck stops and see how full they are 3- If getting full I will stop and ask questions 4- Proceed with caution Please let me know if you guys feel this make sense. One concern is that I do not think I could even put them on. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to all Urnie RE: Has anyone here chained up there bus to go into snow or ice conditions? - Arcticdude - 11-25-2020 19:24 Urnie, That sounds like a reasonable plan of attack. You at least have the option of parking for a day or 2 to allow conditions to get better before continuing on and be relatively comfortable while doing so. The truckers only have their uninsulated shacks. Those just aren't much fun in the cold. Travel Insurance - Urnie-Medie - 12-08-2020 14:56 Hi Please help me with this. What travel insurance is best. I currently have FMCA - Good Sam - AAA RV Seems this is a overkill. Any suggestions thanks Urnie It may help to put this into a new Post Subject - not sure how to do that Any help starting a new subject. RE: Has anyone here chained up there bus to go into snow or ice conditions? - neontwister - 12-23-2020 23:07 Sounds like a good plan. We are going to try to get out to Denver next year (we wanted to go this year but, no). One thing I have been thinking about is snow chains. I don't have any plans on being out there come snow season, but things happen. Someone with a Wandelodge got stuck out west after a breakdown. Think I saw the video on YouTube. They didn't plan to be out in the snow and ice but the repairs took that long. So I think it be prudent to have a set of chains put away on the coach for emergencies. When I was young I drove heavy trucks in the North East. Used chains many times. Like it was said here we have the luxury to sit out the worst of the weather. RE: Has anyone here chained up there bus to go into snow or ice conditions? - Urnie-Medie - 01-05-2021 19:26 Hi Now I can speak with some good information. My son-in-law was concerned so he got some of the "fabric" chains from Amazon. Not sure the brand so I do not want to mention one. Snow came at just the wrong time- a few inches on the road going up to his home. Not extremely steep - but enough that the LXi could not make the climb in the snow. We put on the fabric chains and as soon as we tried to move the fabric chains self destruct. I will be buying a set of regular chains or just not go to my daughters house again in the winter. We did enjoy Christmas with the family. On another hand - AAA was a total disaster. We called them and and they assured they would be there in about an hour. We keep calling back every hour and they kept the same story. After about 6-7 hours I called them again and they said that because of the size of my RV they could not get anyone to take the call. I wish they could have told me earlier. Needless to say I will probably be cancelling my AAA - RV Plus. I finally called Good Sam and they came when promised and got me to my daughters home. We left before New Years because snow was coming and we wanted to leave before the roads had more snow. I will be looking for chains and I like Good Sam. I would appreciate any input. Urnie RE: Has anyone here chained up there bus to go into snow or ice conditions? - Arcticdude - 01-05-2021 22:58 Urnie, Anytime you don't damage the coach in situations like this, you've succeeded! All of the road service plans seem to be hit or miss. You never know when or if somebody is actually going to show up. The call centers don't have a clue when it comes to a vehicle of this size and are either to naïve, to ignorant or to stupid to tell you that they don't have a clue. I'd be fine if they said, "I don't have a clue, let me get somebody who does." I hope your travels are going well. After you say that, ask them to repeat it back to you. Don't ask how I know that. |
