JW, Pro: Regular unleaded is a lot cheaper than diesel. Con: In an accident, gas is a lot more flamable than diesel. In fact I bought a diesel boat because I didn't want to be out on the water sitting on top of a 260 gallon gas tank.

Well, the Diesel is probably a better engine, but when I cracked a cylinder head
on my 391, it was replaced and back on the road for $1200, and took just a
couple of days including getting get a new head....I think a 3208 would be a bit
more, both in time and money.. The 3208 will get 8 to 10 mpg..I get 5 to 6 !!
No worry about all the filters and stuff of the Diesels....The 391 is just a big
Ole Ford engine, with no complicated systems, and most mechanics can easly work
on it....I use whatever antifreeze is on sale at Wallys, and oil change takes
some 7 or 8 Quarts... I have taken our coach over The Grapevine on I-5, Cajon
Pass om the 15, Squalime (sp?) in Washington, and Raton Pass on the 25..Not
fast, but it made it, even with the Jeep on behind...The Diesel would probably
be be a bit faster, but on vacation, I'm in no rush..

If you just use those two you actually have two cons for gas.

Historically, diesel has been cheaper than gas, a lot cheaper.

In recent history diesel had a spike that put it up dramatically relative to
gas, but the reasons for that spike are being market-corrected steadily.

In the latest (8/31) DOE price numbers, on a national basis diesel was still a
little (not a lot) more than gas, $2.674 vs $2.613. On the West Coast, where
both are higher than national, diesel was 15 cents less than gas. Probably
because the west coast has already amortized much of the cost of ULSD conversion
ahead of the rest of the nation.

There is huge diesel refining capacity set to come online over the next few
years as refineries convert to, or build for, hydrocracking instead of cracking.
We will be back to much cheaper diesel (compared to gas) within 5 years, I
think.

Don, That's good news about the diesel. Here at flying J regular unleaded is 2.27 and diesel is 2.50.
