93 PT-40 for sale in Nashville - ronmarabito2002 - 04-21-2008 13:10 There has never been a problem with multi-grade in a 4 stroke engine. The only discussion here referring to straight 40 weight is for the two-cycle engines that Detroit has built. Detroit has always recommended this and has been against the mutli-grades, whether regular oil or synthetic. I believe the primary reason is the fact that the two-strokes idle with only 5 psi oil pressure and multi-grade won't properly support the crankshaft under those conditions. Can't say this for sure, but I would bet this is the reason. R.E. Amsoil is a great oil, I just refuse to do business with pyramid marketers on general ethics issues. Amsoil buys it's base stock from Mobile {Last time I knew}, they use "richer stock", very good 100% synthetic oil.
I used DELVAC1 in my diesel Benz, at 300Kmi, she ran like a top and used none. I used the synthetic for it abality to cold crank, 20,000 mile changes (supported by anaylisis) were nice too.
In my Ford P'Stroke, I use Rotella, engine is 100% after 197Kmi. Chassis will fall apart soon ;-(
I would never put mulitgrade in a 2 cycle detroit, that last a very long time when using the correct 40wt oil. But than, I no longer own one so it's a mute point.

As for the discussion on dino v synthetics. There are applications where synthetics have an advantage. The Canadian North is one. HD truck trannies and difs is another. Road Ranger is able to give million mile warranties on their transmissions due to the use of synthetics. I have an article in one of my other computers that I will try to find. Major oil company engineers are interviewed and the consensus is that synthetics for HD diesel engines is a waste of $. Modern engine oils are so advanced that they are almost synthetics. The additive packages and the viscosity index improvers are light years ahead of the oils of say 20 years ago. Many synthetics are actually made from dino oil. It is simply the way they are refined. As far as I know no major synthetic mfr. has a label that states this oil contains no dino oil. I would like to know if any major transport company uses synthetics? Schneider, UPS, Swift, Wal Mart??? These companies are always loking for ways to reduce costs. If synthetics provided an improvement they would be using that oil. I can only speak from personal experience as I don't have the oil industry back ground that Mike does but due to the fact that I have used synthetic lubricants for many years and have had very good success is the reason that I went with Amsoil's recommendation to use the 15W40 in our 1993 8V92. The engine oil consumption dropped from 1 quart every 200 miles to around 1 quart per 600 miles. With straight 40W Shell Rotella the oil was thin and black within the first 500 miles but with the Amsoil it was still clear after 3000 miles same as in my Duramax Chevy after 7500 miles. Exhaust smoke was also considerably reduced on the 8V92. Use what you like but be assured there are definite advantages to the newer synthetic formulations. It uses an acid / base process and utilizes a water wash / dry process. The system is totally automated and requires about 30 min a day of my time now. I am trying to put together a commercial biodiesel plant now doing all the studies and will be looking for investors soon to get it rolling by end of the year. Government incentives thru 2015 so the numbers look good. I am ready to take my hobby to the next level if I can get all the stars to line up. As far as glycerin, I am stock piling it now. It can be used to produce soap, make compost, engine cleaner, burned in incinator and weed killer. Research is being done now and they hope to develop a process to utilize for making ethanol. I am really excited about that. Currently the market has so much of it that it is priced very low. As a hobbist, I don't produce enough that a commercial buyer would want.
