Battery life and ambient temps - davidbrady - 09-23-2014 13:20

Ever wonder why your batteries don't last long if you spend any significant amount of time in the American Southwest or in any high temperature ambient condition? Here's a very good page, http://www.mpoweruk.com/life.htm, which describes the effects high temps have on a battery's calender life.

Hish , been on the road as usual but heard the same .

as to the bats been running on the genny cause the alternator was cooking the bats . last time I had this issue Randy said it may be lack of a ground wire . I thought it was the regulator, which I had replaced at Q in Jan . Looks like the wire might be the issue, as it was " now it works , now it doesn't ".

you still on the west coast , in that fine H3 Smile

Another option for generator battery.
Shorai Lithium battery. 36 Ah and 540 CCA. Use of standard automatic charger is fine (without equalizing cycle). 1/4 of the standby discharge rate vs AGM so leaving it alone for months is no problem.
A 4 cylinder diesel requires 200 to 300 amps. 4.7 pounds vs 69 for group 31 and much smaller. Bad news.... Near $300.
N.B.... in my case the gen battery is mounted by headlight so changing the battery reduces front axle load by about 80 #.

We are back in FL. It is good to be on the road but great to be back home. We had three and half months out it is time.

Al, you can buy group 31-S batteries at any truck dealer as well, I usually see them on sale at Peterbilt, Kenworth etc. for under $90 each, I just bought 2 for my LX for $87 each here in Canada.
They are cheap enough we always put new batteries in the big trucks and coach every October and that seems to prevent any winter no-start issues

thank s Jim , wish I would have read this sooner . lol paid 113.00@ but you know how it is when your on the road , pay , pay pay just keep her rolling haha

I haven t put them in yet as I worry the alternator will fry them again . any idea what the size of the wire running from alt ground to battery ground should be ? seems like Rand & Rob along with Terry found this to be the cause of the 300 amp surge .

David ?? your thoughts ?
