Tach problem - Steve Johnson - 08-15-2005 11:24 I noticed a few times when starting the engine, the tach would spike over to the far right, over 4000 rpm, and stay there. After a few minutes it would come back down to a reasonable reading. The last two trips of about three hours each, it never came down. Just stayed maxed out to the right until I turned the engine off. Then it came back down to zero. Any idea where I should start? Thank you. Steve Johnson Grand Rapids, MI '82 FC35 Tach problem - Gary Miller - 08-15-2005 14:55 Steve, You have a tach sending unit on the front of your 3208, behind the fan. It's 'L' shaped and the longer portion of it is about the size of a roll of quarters going curbside to roadside. There are wires coming off near the end of it. It's hard to get to and remove but you may try getting some lubrication into it. I'd suggest a graphite based speedometer cable lubricant. On the drivers side of the sending unit will be a rubber cap (or the remnants thereof) which covers where a cable would hook up to it. Remove it and try soaking some lubrication into it. Sounds like the internal magnets and drive tines are locking up, and it needs cleaning/lubricating. I've had a similar problem to Steve's for a while. I'd like to free up the sender as well. Secondly, suddenly the last time I got out with the bird my oil temperature gauge went south and read nothing. How would I troubleshoot that gauge, where is the sender for it etc.? Lastly, there was a couple of posts on steering wheels recently. I had the unenviable experience of my wheel coming off in my hands a couple of years ago, this after crossing the great USA, and taking three maybe four trips around the east. Seems the nut wasn't torqued properly and it worked loose. I was EXTREMELY lucky that it decided to come off while I was stationary not while driving on the curves of US7 in Vermont. When I put it on, tightened the nut etc. I used locktite to seal the deal. I check the thing periodically as well, (just a little paranoid). Bob Benner on beautiful LI, having just given my daughter away at a wedding held here at the farm for 300, (we cleaned up yesterday), looking forward to a get away to Pennsy this weekend. 86PT40 --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Gary Miller" > Steve, > > You have a tach sending unit on the front of your 3208, behind the > fan.
