Jim:

Your water heater is in the drivers side rear corner under the closet.
There should be a hatch on the flooring of that closet for minimum viewing.
There is a circuit breaker in the main electrical panel for the water
heater and there should be a red switch located either in the right rear
closet or the curb side rear closet that supplies the 110vac through a
relay to the heating element on the water heater.. The relay is a 12 vdc
coil and the ground is attached to a sensor in line on the output side of
the shore water or fresh water tank, in an elbow (brass). This wire does
corrode from time to time and detaches. This is the safety preventing 110
vac power to the heating element if no water is sensed in the piping. That
relay is usually housed in a 4x4 electrical box with a raised bezel for
clearance.

So be sure the c/b is on in the electrical panel, then the red switch is in
the on position. Then if no heating, you will need to put the leads of an
VOM meter on the connections to the heating element to see if you have
110vac there. If not then you need to check the safety relay. If 110vac is
present at the heating element then, of course, the element is bad and
needs to be replaced.

Jim:

Yes there is a switch, actually 2. One is in the main breaker box and
should be marked water heater. The other should be in the curb side rear
closet behind the mirror door and should have a tag saying "water heater."
Some times there are 3 switches in a row in that area and usually the water
heater is the center switch, but not always. If the water heater switch is
not in the curb side rear closet then it's alternative site is in the
drivers side rear closet area behind the mirrored door. Both of these
places are in the rear of the Coach and on each side of the bed.

An after thought, a third alternative switch site is located on one side of
the bed or the other in the base board area.

Hi Bo:

The one under the kitchen sink is usually for the instant hot located on
the sink. I have not seen the water heater switch mounted there, but it is
certainly possible, of course.

Ralph,

Under the kitchen sink is where it's at in my 91, along side the
Instant Hot switch. Still has one of those red light up switches to
let you know that it is on. I too had expected it to be where it is
in the 83, back in a closet.

Mike, Bo:

That is one of the many things about Bird's, always something new to learn.
Thanks to both of you for another location alternative. I have recently
been in an '88 and an '89 and both were in the rear closet. Funny how
things can be on the print schedules and wired so differently from Coach to
Coach. But then, they are hand made Coaches.

Jim,

I am sure you probably have found the switch. I have a 85 pt40 and
there is a heater switch located in the right rear closet behind the
bed next to the engine heater and battery heater, also there is a
breaker panel with a heater circuit. Mine are lighted switches in the
closet.
