Battery Isolator - dspithaler@... - 11-07-2005 07:57

Hi All Here is another battery problem. My 89 SP 36' is in the shop
right now getting a new compressor. While waiting outside not plugged in I went
in it today & the coach battery's were drained & not showing anything on the
gauge. The starting battery's showed 12 volts but when I tried to start it
there wasn't anything. It didn't even try to spin. I couldn't even get the
genny
to turn. I tried the switch that was supposed to put the two banks together
& that didn't work. How are they supposed to work. Should you be able to
start the genny with dead house battery's? Should the coach be able to start
with
dead house battery's? I know it won't shift if it doesn't get at least 10
volts to the ZF transmission. Is that the same with starting? Do you need
better than 10 volts to the tranny to get it to start? I want to get this
solved
before leaving for FL & whereever the end of Dec. All help appreciated.

Don-- I had the same problemwhen i brought mine home for the first
time.In two days everything was dead, wouldnt start.Same indications
as you have.I just dont leave it upluged anymore.I dont know enough
about bb's to know why.

we never leave our coach unplugged. Harvey Lawrence once told me there is close
to a 15 amp phantom drain on the batteries- and if mine sits too long unplugged-
have to plug her in for a while to be able to start her. ernie- 83pt40 in texas

Battery Isolator - Ralph L. Fullenwider - 11-07-2005 15:30

Sounds like it is time to check the 2 solenoids between the gen set battery
and the HWH jack motor.
Also check the cables going to those solenoids, they can rub on the frame
and cause a high resistance short. Drain batteries but not trip a breaker.

Battery Isolator - fred89sp - 11-08-2005 10:01

Suggest you try the following in this order:

1. Press and hold the aux battery switch as you try to start the
generator. The generator is started with the coach batteries which
are dead but isolated from the rear chassis batteries. There may be
enough in the chassis batteries (via pressing and holding the aux
battery switch) to start the generator even though not enough to start
the Cat. Let the generator charge both coach and chassis batteries
for a while and then start the Cat.

2. Can you plug in the coach? If so plug it in which will charge both
coach and chassis batteries for a while and then start the Cat .

3. Jump start the generator by jumping the coach batteries. Let the
generator charge both coach and chassis batteries for a while and then
start the Cat .

Once things are running you will not have a ZF voltage problem. Be
sure A/T switch is not off.
