Drivers mirror position - Tim Hannink - 01-03-2006 15:45

I am installing a set of Velvac 2030 mirrors on my coach and have a
question regarding positioning the drivers side mirror. The
instructions state "with driver in drivers seat and viewing thru
windshield locate mirror assembly as far forward as possible..."

This is how the stock drivers mirror was adjusted and I tried this
position with the new mirror and it did work but it looked awful.
The mirror arm stuck straight out from the front of the coach.

Looking at the ads for various high-end coaches in the new FMCA
magazine, I see the mirror being adjusted so it is visible out the
side window and sits almost perpendicular to the side of the coach.
The only notable exception was the "Ferrari", the bright red 450LXi.

Does it make any difference which way it is adjusted or is it just a
coach-builders preference? Any pros or cons?

Thanks,

Tim,

FWIW, I'll relate our daughter's experience when driving a Blue Bird
school bus. An oncoming truck on a narrow road smashed the mirror and
sent broken glass through the open side window. True, it was a west
coast style mirror but the farther the mirror protrudes toward the
opposing lane the greater the chance you have of clipping the mirror.
The problem would be more pronounced on a later model wide-body
coach. Looks aside, it would seem to me that overall safety would be
enhanced with the mirror closer to the coach and forward with the
proviso that the windshield pillar doesn't obstruct you view.
