Sewage odor - Scott Forman - 01-18-2006 16:27
My tanks (and all plumbing for that matter) have been completely
drained since the end of November. When I drive my coach down the
road, a sewage smell fills the coach. Once parked, the smell will go
away and not come back until I drive again.
Obviously I need to clean the tanks out better...but any ideas why the
smell only comes when I am moving? Any tricks on cleaning the tanks
out? I have a rear bath.

If you completely drained the sewage lines you have no water in the
traps to prevent the sewage smell from entering the coach. With no
water in the trap to the vent pipe the wind could generate positive
pressure in the holding tank and then then odor could come up through
the commode since there is no water in that trap.
That's my guess.

Hi Scott,
A couple of things come to mind that may be causing your problem. First
is that one or more of the traps from sinks or shower are dry. This
allows the odors to permeate the coach. Also, when traveling, it is not
uncommon for a negative pressure to be formed inside the coach. This
will suck odors or whatever from any source it can find. That coupled
with a dry or partially dry trap can cause the problem. Try running
some water (or antifreeze if you feel the need) into the drains and try
driving it again. Hopefully it is this simple.

Scott, I think George hit a likely cause...the traps being dry. On
my 85FC33SB I started having the same symptoms. I found three areas
that I addressed and since then, no problems. I found that the
internal toilet valve seal was dryed out and not holding water...if
it is not water tight, it is not air tight...i rebuilt the valve
with a kit. Since I had the toilet off the flange, i saw where the
wax seal had been shifted around and also was not forming a good
seal, I replaced the wax seal, using about one and a half wax seals
(i built up a little extra near the bolt holes). Finally, about
every third cycle of using the tanks, i add some soap into the pre-
fill water along with anti-odor chemical....and when dumping, i give
the black a good long rinse from the toilet/vanity sink.

I have also found the blade that closes and traps the water if there is anythig
blocking the
closer it won;t seal causing an oder. at least on mine
guy smalley
