Problem with air operated steeps on fc birds - Jon - 02-12-2006 17:07

I have spent a few hours trying to figure out why my steep would not go
into stow position and found out this to be the problem.

The door electric switch that activates the air control vlv (That
control the air piston on the steeps) was not grounding like it
should. I could open the steps but not with-track them. This switch
over time become over used and will not ground the circuits used to
activate the vlv to the close position. If you have not check this
switch out lately and you think it looks good from the outside, you
might be surprised at how corroded thies units get being exposed to the
wind and rain on the inside. Maybe it time to replace this item before
you have a day like I did checking everything and finally that push
button located at the door entrance.

Oops I had that backasswards on that switch I meant that when it is
pushed in, it is suppose to stop the flow of electricity to the air
actuated air vlv's and not ground the system. And my old one was just
letting the juice flow all the time. Jon

Tom I have the air operated type and I thought I had it fixed with
installing a new switch but back to square one and no fixie. I don't
know how Bluebird ever designed a unit like this but its like working
on a rubics cube. I get the juice to open the air soloniod vlv but
when I try to retrack it it just sit there. I can override the power
to the solinoid and the stairs will close. Owell tomorrow if its haft
way decent I will rack my brain again with this electrical problem.

Problem with air operated steeps on fc birds - Tom Warner - 02-13-2006 15:56

Jon if you look under the back of the step you will find either one
or two microswitches that control the shut off of air to the step
when it is fully out or fully in. Yours might have only one
microswitch and only god knows why BB designed some of the BB with
only one (like mine). You will also find 2 air solenoids one to
control air to push the step out and one to pull it in. They are
connected to a double acting air cylinder (one to each end thru a
1/4" plastic air line. On the back of each air solenoid you will
find a small round brass sintered filter with a screw thru it that
can be adjusted with a screwdriver. This adjustment determines the
speed which the air step goes out and in.
There is also a switch on the small panel to the left of the entrance
as you go in the coach that allows you to hold the step out even if
the door is opened and closed and throwing the switch in the other
position the steps will act normally, out when the door is opened and
in when the door is closed.
