Totally smoked my battery charger, Transfer switch questions - scott_l_peatross - 04-07-2006 05:48 Well, I plugged in my '87PT40 to my 50 amp service and I noticed the air compressor wasn't running. Then I saw smoke billowing out of my battery charger compartment. Grabbed the extinguisher and opened the compartment door and my Trucharge 40+ battery charger was releasing all it's smoke big time. Pulled the 50amp cord to check it out. The Trucharge is history. I turned off all the breakers in the coach, plugged in the 50amp cord, and I get a loud buzz from the Shore power switch located by the copilots chair. I can't see how to get it out, everything is carpeted over. Is there an access panel under the carpet? What failure mode of that switch would cook my battery charger? Did it get socked with 220v ? I guess I want to pull that switch to check it out, see if maybe it's safe to use the 30 amp cords. I'm leaving today for an outing, I gotta get something working. Ideas? What happened to you is exactly what happened to me when I was plugging in at a place that the power was wrongly wired resulting in a 220v spike. What you are experiencing is hopefully much less serious than mine was. But you, without a Surge Protector? Shame, shame. I have to say the surge problem occurred with my 1991 SP36, and I can guarentee you that I ordered one when we got home after that mess. Still, you are right I should have owned a surge protector before that. It taught me a lot about the electronics in these coaches, but I could have learned another way. Even with my ignorance displayed then, the insurance company helped out alot.
