Kohler/Perkins Generator Expert - Jay Darst - 04-07-2006 14:30

Who is the Kohler Generator expert?

While at the Maxton Rally, Scott heard a rattle noise in my
generator over and above the Perkins.

He had problems with his generator where the support bearing(at the
opposite end of the rotor from the Perkins) had wallowed out the
bearing holder thingy. Anyway he replaced his generator.

I'd like for mine to die so it make sense to move up to a 15kw
PowerTech.

I have heard that the Perkins/Kohler's have seen 30,000 hours of
use. So, with proper maintenance, the dam thing is going to outlive
me.

Would like someone to suggest what this rattle might be. Have
ordered the replacement bearing and support parts. And get installed
see if thats it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Jay,

Not suggesting such bad for your generator, but last year the bracket
that holds the brushes in the generator broke on mine, and the loose
part and brush spun with the armature damaging it to the extent of
needing replacement. About a $1,000 deal. Obviously, we had no
charging ability at the time of occurrence.

And, thanks for your great dissertation on the inverter install. I
remember we appreciated your helping us when we installed ours.

Jay, ours has what sounds like a rattle also. Found a crack in the
muffler last fall after it was getting louder, we can only hear it on
the driver side of the bus so thought that must be it. Well after
removing the exaust over the winter a fixing the muffler, much to our
surprise when we put it back together last weekend it still makes
that noise. Now 2 different deisel michanics think it could be the
exaust is to restricded(?) causing the motor to make this noise. We
had it all apart last spring and the end bearing seamed fine, it also
ran all last summer like that with no problems.
Hey are you and your brother coming to RA again this year? Could hear
they had some big cars running yesterday

Jay, maybe the noise is the muffler, it may have internal rust and
lose baffles??? I have newage /Kubota gensets (Coleman)on light
towers with 15,000 hours but the demand-load is high and constant, I
hear that gensets spin apart due to low use and light load. I would
like to find a small 2K diesel to use as a light load- low
consumption generator.

Jeff,

Thanks for the info on the exhaust noise possibility...

My exhaust system has larger pipe than most I have noticed.

Dan will be at Road America the weekend of 04/28-29-30. I'll be in
St.Louis at the Ram Tough 200.

Liked the RA weekend last year. What a great facility!

Greg,

That could be! Exhaust is looking a little shabby on the Perkins...

Jeff August suggested that there may be something in the exhaust
system causing the rattle.

Certainly will look into that!

Springdield, IL where I just got done installing a new Leece NeVille
320 amp alternator and replaced the wire with 1/0, new conduit,
cleaned things up a bit. Runs front a/c off the inverter at 13Volts

One thing to look for if your exhaust has a heat/sound blanket
installed. The tight
fitting jacket can hide an exhaust that is rusting out. When I
rebuilt mine, the pipe
literally feel into three pieces when I removed it. Could be just
pieces of pipe
rattling around.
