Generator Problem - Chris - 05-20-2006 14:09 Recently purchased an 83 FC 35SB with the 12.5 diesel generator. With the generator running, only one leg will work. If I turn the breaker off inside the generator compartment, the other leg will come on and the one that was working will turn off. I have not been able to make both sides run. On 50amp shore both work fine. I have also noticed that with the bottom leg on, the one that controls the mid and rear A/C, it always reads less voltage on the AC monitor....any ideas on whats going on? Are there any other breakers on the actual generator that I am missing? Thanks Chris Reed 83 FC 35SB Plant City, FL Generator Problem - Ralph L. Fullenwider - 05-20-2006 14:11 HI Chris: Replace both 50 amp breakers in the gen set control box and check the tightness of the neutral. Then open the back of the Kohler and check the tightness of L-0/L-1/L-2 mounted on the studs found there. The two 50 amp breakers should be tied together (handles) so you can only turn off or on both at the same time. The breakers are the same as home units and can be found at Lowes/Home Depot/Ace Safe travels, Ralph and Charolette Fullenwider Ralph's RV Solutions, Duncan, Oklahoma http://home.swbell.net/rlf47/index.htm At 02:09 AM 5/21/2006 +0000, you wrote: >Recently purchased an 83 FC 35SB with the 12.5 diesel generator. Happy to hear that the breakers are available at the local hardware store... I'll check them out when we work on the Birds next weekend... Thanks Chris Reed 83 FC 35SB Plant City,FL. "Ralph L. I pulled the breaker out and one side was fried bad. Looked like a bad connection... Replaced the breaker from Lowes for under $8.00...Now generator powers whole coach fine...not just one section like before... It is a yanmar. I started it and it ran for some time normally then shut off. Now it will not start from any of the switches, I just get a clicking noise from one of the bosch relays in that little metal box by the gen in the foreward compartment. I replaced that and it does the same clicking. I can start the genarator by jumping across the starter while holding the throttle solonoid in a bit, but it stopps as soon as I let go. I checked and there is no voltage at the solonoid while it is running. Also there is now power in the bus while the genarator is running. Any ideas? Generator Problem - Ralph L. Fullenwider - 07-10-2010 11:38 Hi Robert: The fuel solenoid is what your holding slightly to run the generator. There are several things that will be the reason for it not to pull in. So here go a few questions to you; 1. Is there voltage on the coil of the start relay located on top of the starter? 2. Does the starter actually try to turn the engine over? 3. Check the fuse or circuit breaker on the control box? 4. Check the coolant fluid level? 5. Check the oil level? 6. checked to be sure wire did not come off the high water temp switch? and grounding some where. or hwt switch failed closed. 7. Wire off the oil pressure switch? Answering the questions are the first steps to be taken, I write the checks down as I go to keep track of where I have been Now then, with the engine running, you say there is no output from the gen set? and does your Coach have a manual or automatic transfer switch? Further checks; 1 As Ernie said, check the state of the gen battery 2 check the diode on the curb side down by the oil pressure sender. 3 Check the bearing in the end bell, does it move up and down greatly with a screw driver used as a pry bar? 4. Is a wire broken off one or both brushes on the slip rings? 5. is the diode and fuse on the quadrature windings ok? Answer those questions and we can go further Safe travels, Ralph and Charolette Fullenwider "84FC35 "Ruff Diamond" Duncan, Oklahoma At 09:43 PM 7/10/2010 +0000, you wrote: >I am having trouble with the genarator in my 88 pt 40. The starter will not run at all from any of the switches. The battery is new and 12.9 volts. I checked at the top of the starter and it is 12.9 there as well. When I jump across the two large posts on the starter the gen starts and runs as long as the actuator is held in. When I switch the coaches manual power switch from 50 amp to gen. there is no power in the coach. I checked the coolant level and oil level and checked for any disconected wires on anything ion the engine. There is only a small 10 amp fuse on the control box and that is okay. The items you listed under further checks I am not at all familiar with. Am i over my head with this already, or is there anything I can check? Now then we know the battery is ok and the starter is running, now we need to get 12 vdc to the small terminal on the starter solenoid sitting on top of the starter. So place your mater red lead on the terminal and the black on a ground and set the meter to dc volts. Check the voltage on the small terminal when you flip the start switch on the control box, you should see 12 vdc? If you do see 12 vdc then the starter solenoid is suspect, and if you don't see the 12vdc then we trace back to the point of where we lose it, and I will have to go get my schematic for the Yammar.
