New York Round Trip - Jay Darst - 06-18-2006 03:17

Welp, we are back from a whirlwind round trip to New York City.

Left Springfield, IL a week ago last Thursday(June 8) and rolled
back into Springfield 10p June 16.

New York is not what I had expected. People were very considerate
and very helpful. We midwesterners associate the physically fast
pace of the northeasterners as being brash and inconsiderate. They
just don't have time to meander and small talk. Movement in the city
requires one to be alert and move at a fast pace, if you don't,
you'll be FOREVER trying to get around.

EVERYONE I met in New York was absolutely great!

If you plan to visit New York City with your Bird, Stay at Croton
Point Park. (Incidentally, they were filming a portion of the
Russell Crowe movie, "Tenderness", at the camping cabins area)

http://www.rvparkreviews.com/regions/New_York/Croton_on_Hudson.html

It is full hook-up and just 30 miles north of the city on the Hudson
River. Very nice! and only $180/week, what a deal! They also have
camping cabins, can't comment on their amenities.

At the entrance to the park is a train station that will take into
Grand Central Station. From there, grab a subway train to anywhere.
The Greyline tours sales rep will greet you when you get off the
subway at Times Square. Not a bad deal, do it thru the week,
weekends are BIZ ZEE at the sights to see.

Thom Sorentino was my awesome host while visiting NYC. Thom was
instrumental in making my stay more comnfortable. Thom greeted us
the night we arrived, at our camp site with 3 New York Style pizzas
(Outstanding pizza by the way!). He was prepared with train and
subway schedules, maps, etc. What a great host! Thank you very much
THOM! With your help, our visit was made easy ;~}.

About 17 hour drive from Springfield, IL to Croton-On-Hudson, NY.
Bird performed very well. Rather mountainous across NE Ohio and all
of Pennsylvania as well as New Jersey and New York. Fuel milage was
good at 6.8mpg for the trip, my best yet. Did not use cruise control
in the mountains, only in the flats of Indiana and Illinois. Fuel
was cheapest in Indiana @ $2.75 per gallon. New York was the highest
at $3.19/gallon.

My daughter is now represented by IKON Models Inc

http://www.ikonmodels.com/

She now lives in New Jersey and travels to NY city daily, SCARES THE
SHIT OUT OF ME! She's just 17 years old. The model agency has
apartments in a town of about 15,000 population, about an hour from
the city. They keep an eye on their young models very well. Which is
somewhat a relief...

Neat trip.

Look forward to visiting Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge again :-)

Jay,

Glad you had a good experience in the big apple. If anybody else has
any thoughts of coming this way, please let me know and I'll do what
I can to help out. Its always great to meet people on the forum. It
was a pleasure meeting Jay, and inspiring to see his coach. His
electrical system and entertainment system are one to envy. He gave
me some great direction and advice as to repairs on my old bus also.
I've actually got a bunch of stuff ordered and getting ready to fix
some things.

We'll be heading to Croton Point in a couple of weeks. Currently
waiting for the idler pulley to be repaired in MO, then on to DC
for three or four days, out to the Maryland coast, then up to NYC.

We'll be at Croton Point in a couple of weeks but the exact date is
undetermined. Perhaps we can hook up.
