Water cooled in a box, can't make out what "pacific rim" entity crafted the 3
cyl diesel. It works.

That's inspiring, I felt guilt because the truck genset has 200+ hrs since
oil change. I might stretch it as I don't like the Genewreck that much anyhow.
On the other hand a friend of mine lost a rod bearing on his 7.5 Onan at 6000
hrs and I doubt he changed the oil on time.

i have a buddy with some semis,they haul frozen foods in a refer
trailer,they change oil at 1000 hours in the engine on the refer unit.it never
shuts down...its about the same tupe deal we have,4 cyl diesel engine,it does
have a bigger oil pan,it holds more oil..i run my genny for days on end,and i
never service it while on the road,the oil level never drops so i don't worrie
about it..almost 6000 hours on mine,and if it blows up,i'm going to powertech

reason for oil changes. You know, fire it up-make coffee-shut it
off. Thats what is hard on things.

Replacement Generator - beancounterman - 05-15-2005 01:47

Some quick comments.

I have about 30 years experience around big coaches with diesel generators. In
the early
years, these gensets were virtually all Perkins powered. Later, Yamar has been
the little
diesel engine of choice. Anyway, both brands have been almost bullet-proof from
the
reliability standpoint. In addition, they are long-lived to the point that very
few get to the
point of needing overhaul or replacement. I'd guess that in most cases, 10,000
hours is
attainable, maybe more.

Regarding oil change intervals, how about doing oil sampling to validate
extended change
intervals rather than guessing? I think any large generator or truck shop can
take periodic
samples and send them to a good lab until you validate an extended interval. I'd
also
suggest using a major brand diesel synthetic lube oil like Mobil Delvac 1 if
you're going for
extended change intervals.

Replacement Generator - George Lowry - 05-15-2005 02:12

Jeff,

Here are some of my thoughts... Most generators fail because of
non-use. According to the figures you gave, your generator has been
used for a total of 5500 hours in 25 years which averages out to 18
hours per month. Not a bad usage factor if it was uniform, however, I
would assume that your generator, like most, had long periods of
non-use. Mechanical equipment tends to fail more from non-use than
heavy use. When an engine sits, seals dry out, get hard, and take a
set which then leak.

The Perkins engine has been used in industrial applications for many
years and has a good reputation, better than the Onan generators,
though the Diesel Onans seem to be better than the gas driven. Again,
most of these problems come from non-use.

That Perkins that you have, if used and serviced regularly should give
you over 30,000 hours of service. IF you are determined to change, I
would consider either the Power Tech, made in FL or the WRICO made in
Eugene, OR. Both are of excellent quality and are good for at least
30,000 hours if exercised regularly. RVers tend to "save their
generators" by not using them and when needed the generator is not
their for them.

It is your money, but I suggest you talk to the experts in the field,
Dick Wright of Wrico or the owner of Power Tech. I think they will
both tell you to replace the seals and USE your Perkins powered generator.

oil samples! heres a good story on that,on the TDR forum a guy bought a new
dodge diesel truck,and he decided to send oil samples off instead of changing
oil every 3000 miles or so,so,he sends 3 samples off every time to 3 different
places to get them analized,blackstone labs,cat and another one.all 3 came back
everytime with three completely different reports,none of them were the same,not
even close.this thread went on for years,up to 20,000 miles on the truck before
the guy gave up.he said that its way better to change your oil and trust that
the new oil was good rather than trust the labs to do it right and get you back
the results from your oil,not someone else's..i change my oil.its way cheaper in

Replacement Generator - George Lowry - 05-15-2005 02:20

Got to agree that Yanmar puts out a heck of an engine. I have one of
their tractors (which is a red John Deere). Yep, Yanmar makes tractors
for Deere. It is powerful for a small tractor, runs all day of very
little fuel and once I got rid of that puny Japanese battery and put
in a group 24, starts every time even after sitting for months.

If I was buying new and had a choice, I would but the Yanmar, but my
experience with the Perkins has also been good.

George,
My experience with Perkins goes back 50 years to when it was the
engine of choice
as an auxiliary in sailboats. As a kid, I fondly remember the family and
friends trying
to get the blasted thing started.....lots of good blue language. All of
our boating friends
had the same problem....getting them started and then keeping them running.
Now, on a sailboat, if you can't get it started when you need it,
you can get in real
trouble very fast. A lot of cruises were cancelled for lack of a reliable
auxiliary. A genset
on a motorhome is not life threatening, while a faulty engine on a boat can
kill you.
Over the years, nothing has changed my mind about Perkins. Almost
all my boating
buddies canned them decades ago...besides, the Yanmar's don't leak and mark
their
territory like a Perkins. Reminds me of my old Norton Atlas.

Blair,

As a former Perkins diesel powered trawler owner I can say that my Perkins
ran trouble free for years. Auxiliary engines in sailboats always fail
because sailors are purists and refuse to take care of the engine. Don'ts
put the blame for a failed engine on the brand, but rather on the care they
get. Sounds like you had a motor boat with a sail instead of a sailboat
with a motor. I enjoy your posts, but will disagree with you on his one.

Replacement Generator - Tom Warner - 05-15-2005 03:26

I would guess that my small tractor with a German twin cylinder air cooled
diesel is in the same class as the Perkins. I have had the tractor since
1981 and except for changing the oil, filters etc it has operated
flawlessly and started even in the coldest weather. I doubt if it is even
broken in yet. The japanese diesels are fine engines but they are not by
any stretch of my imagination in the same class as the Perkins. There would
have to be a real catastrophic failure in the Perkins for me to even
consider getting rid of it.

Just want to point out that the seal Jeff refers to is not a mechanical type of
seal but a packing type of seal.Sometimes the reason they leak is the shaft is
grooved out so it not just a matter of replacing the seal it also a little shaft
work.Unless you can do all the work yourself the question become how much money
do you want to spend on a 25 year old generator engine.

A $6000. repair bill cause me to get rid of the old outdated perkins.
If the Perkins is so great why is it not still being use in new generators?
