South Padre Christmas/New Year's Break - mbulriss - 11-15-2006 09:12 Since I am posting information on the Lone Star Birds Rallies, and several people have asked us about whether South Padre is on the agenda for this year-end, ..... I will remind everyone that this will be the 10th Annual (for some of us) South Padre Island Texas Christmas/New Years Bluebird Breakaway. Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend, whether you own a Bird or not. It is a totally unofficial and unscripted gathering. Last year, there were 10 Birds that spent at least some of the break period down there. We typically spend any where between December 23 and January 2 down there - varies by year depending where Christmas falls. We stay at the following location http://destinationsouthpadre.com/ and just enjoy the good weather, good friends, good seafood, good margaritas (oh yeah!) and recharge the old batteries for the coming new year. Feel free to join us. We will spend the week or so earlier in the Texas Hill Country. How long does it take to drive from SA, TX to South Padre. Trying to work an unstructured schedule. It will take 5-6 hours. After you get off Highway 37, there are lots of smaller towns along the way that cause you to slow down. Once you turn on Park Road 100 from Harlingen to South Padre, you absolutely will want to obey each and every speed limit in each of the little towns along that road! ;^) Mike Bulriss 1991 WB40 "Texas Minivan" San Antonio, TX --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Leroy Eckert" > > Mike: > We reserved from Dec 23 -30 at Destination RV, South Padre. If you want to stay off the interstate, and only if that suits you, I would look at going to Uvalde and then across the bottom of Texas through McAllen and into Harlingen that way. It is much more remote and good if you don't like interstate. The interstate from SA to Robstown is usually lightly traveled. Look at the map and decide. Just a thought. Trying to find a few Historical and/or fun places to show the grandkids and have a little fun. Haven't been to SP since 1977. Thanks for the info. We've traveled south to Fl. and Az. but never Tx. We've sent in reservations to arrive on the 29th. Should we ask for a certain area or can they accommodate us we we arrive? How many others out there are planning on coming? While I think they could accommodate you when you show up, since you are coming close to New Year's when the snowbirds really start flocking in, it is probably worth the time to call them at 800-867-2373 to make sure they got the reservation and that they understand the size of your rig and have you in a big enough spot. Check the park map at http://destinationsouthpadre.com/ResortMap.htm to see the layout. We usually congregate down the isle from spot 149-130 or so. My understanding is that all the outer view spots were sold out at this point. Also, since you have not been there, when you get off highway 77/83 and onto park road 100 headed to Port Isabel and South Padre, you will encounter many small towns where the speed limit quickly drops to 45/35/25. You really want to watch for those signs, enjoy the local scenery, and fastidiously adhere to the local speed limits. Just an fyi, since the official state tourist & visitor's center right off 77/83 in Harlingen openly refer to the little towns along park road 100 as speed traps. See you soon! Drive safely. Mike Bulriss 1991 WB40 "Texas Minivan" - with all fresh, as of yesterday, alternators/belts/sporlan valve/oil/filters & ready to go!!
