So I keep the Perkins, more $$$ for the convection microwave! Does the
genset battery charge off of teh converters (when on shore power) and
the cat charging system, or is it stand alone and only charges when the
Perkins is running? Thanks for all the other input. Doug Engel.

I believe the 1981 generator is like my 1982 FC35 generator and if so
the generator battery gets its charge from a factory modification
across the aux Battery solenoid that is located under the side steps
attached to the inside frame rail. Across the solenoid is a 30 amp
circuit breaker and a 30 amp diode that will then charge the battery
whether the Cat engine is running or the generator is running and the
chargers are doing it thru this same circuit.

However with that said I found in my generator control box that the
Kohler charging system was still inside the box and only had to be
connected to then charge the generator battery whenever the generator
was running. For some reason BB did not connect it.

I believe that it originally charged through a resistor pack in the
control box of the genset. This original setup doesn't work very
well, many have been modified as Tom outlined, a better method. A
stud-diode and self-resetting circuit-breaker is what BB used (in
later models and PTs).
