Carpet around the Steering column - Chuck Wheeler - 12-16-2006 02:26

The top seal is bad on the power steering unit on our 82 FC. I have removed
the shroud around the steering and started to pull back the carpet and mat.
The carpet appears to go under the pedestal for the phone. Does the
pedestal remove or should I just cut the carpet? I'm not actually going to
do the replacement of the unit, but I didn't see any reason to pay shop time
for them to get at it.

I just did this on my 82 since I'm working on the power steering. Are you sure
it is not the
return hose? Mine was leaking right there where it attaches to the box. I
don't know what
you mean by the pedestal for the phone, since I don't have one, but I just
removed the
cover around the steering shaft, unbolted the accelerator and peeled back the
carpet and
underlayment, then removed the cover at the steering box.
Have them check the return hose while they are in there. Mine was in extremely
bad
condition.

David,

I wish it was just a hose! When I found the oil coming from the steering
shaft I disconnected the shaft from the steering wheel to see if it was a
seal that can be changed from the outside. (We used to do that on
Freightliners) The steering input shaft moves side to side and in and out
and that is what took the seal out. Something is really bad on the inside!
