Rebuild or Replace Alternator - Al - 02-26-2007 17:07 My last trip I noticed my alternator was not charging. Had to start generator up and connect our start / house batteries together to maintain the starting batteries. We put a volt meter on the alternator and got no charging reading. Any other tests that we should do? I researched the rest of the post and looks like one person had the unit rebuilt. What is best rebuild or replace? I have 8 house 6 volt house batteries and 2 starting battteries. I think I should increase my alternator sizing so the battery bank is charged faster while under engine power. Any recommendations? I went from a 130a to a 160a, and the cost of a new 160a alternator vs. rebuilding the old 130a was a difference of about a hundred bucks.
