Yep, it does not say that on the road. My point is that, if you really get out
there and look, you will run into signs like that in a lot of states, and if you
decide to cross the scales every time you see one you can eventually expect to
have a confrontation with someone angry about you taking up their space/time.

Unless someone can show otherwise (and this discussion has been held many, many
times in RV forums without anyone coming up with an actual exception), I will
say that there are zero states where the scales apply to anything but
commercial. RVs only have to cross them when they are being driven by delivery
drivers, and those will be correctly tagged.

OK, but in order to do that, they did something overt, right? There had to be
some way all those RV drivers who "know" you don't go into scales now "knew"
that they had to?

That's what I figured. A sign telling RVs to enter the scales is a whole
different thing, and if I ever see one I will enter as asked. I wasn't RVing in
the months just after 9/11, so I never saw any of that.

Going back to the original comment about the weight station on 95 in
Maryland indicating all vehicles over 5T GVW must go across the
scales - I travel 95 frequently through Maryland and historically
took the position that based on extensive travels through the US and
Canada that they must not really intend for Motorhomes to stop at the
weight station. I had in fact driven by the weight station with out
stopping several times but, I remained uncomfortable with the wording
on the sign and decided to contact the Maryland authorities on this
topic. I contacted "Truck Weigh and Inspections Stations, call the
Maryland State Police, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, 901
Elkridge Landing Road, Room 300, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090,
Telephone 410-694-6100" They informed me that RV's are indeed exempt
and these signs, while they do not specifically say so, are intent
for commercial vehicles. I asked for the specific statute so I could
print a copy to carry if I was ever stopped and was told that they
did not think that section of the statutes was up on the INTERNET yet
but not to worry, I would NOT be stopped for passing by the weight
station. Call them yourselves at the phone number above if you want -
I'm satisfied and will keep flying by the scales without stopping.
However, if any of you folks do find the statute on the marylandroads
web site, please send me a copy!

Bob Loomas is correct, he should know being a commercial truck driver
for many many years. Weighing stations do not want motorhomes to go
through their facilities since they can cause traffic to back up and
are a potentil traffic safety hazards. But if you do mistakenly go
thru a scale and are in violation of one or more laws you can bet
your bottom dollar that you will be cited and fined. Why would any
motorhome owner even think about using one?

Weigh stations are for checking the regulatory compliance of
commercial trucks ONLY, and each state comes under the direction of
the Department of Transportation (DOT). They are already over
burdened by the dramatic increase of commercial trucks on the roads.
Some states (Virginia for instance) have renamed weigh stations and
are now calling them Motor Carrier Service Centers others like
California are calling them Commercial Vehicle Enforcement
Facilities (commonly called Weigh Stations or Truck
Scales), http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/trucks/weight/. The
renaming of weigh stations should give everyone a clue as to their
purpose and whom they service. I quickly checked the various states
and could not find one single reference to motorhomes but someone
else can try if they like. http://www.coopsareopen.com/ . A word to
the wise.sometimes a little common sense is the best policy....let
sleeping dogs lie.

Overweight - Larry - 04-06-2007 07:37

Guys,
Also, all the other states you go through do not say ALL vehicles, they say only
commercial vehicles or trucks... This only happened in MD, where the sign read
ALL vehicles...

That's what I figured. A sign telling RVs to enter the scales is a
whole different thing, and if I ever see one I will enter as asked. I wasn't
RVing in the months just after 9/11, so I never saw any of that.

Tom,
For the most part they are all correct... Now what happens when you get a
disgruntled police officer that is new to the job and takes the signage
litterally and then stops you because he thinks you avoided going over the
scales and issues you a ticket, which you apparently can get squashed, then you
have to take the time to do this... As I see it, it is easier to go over the
scales then to take chances that you may be stopped... If enough people do this
then they will have to change the signage to the appropriate wording...

Bob Loomas is correct, he should know being a commercial truck
driver

for many many years.

Scales), http://www.dot. ca.gov/hq/ traffops/ trucks/weight/ . The

renaming of weigh stations should give everyone a clue as to their

purpose and whom they service. I quickly checked the various states

and could not find one single reference to motorhomes but someone

else can try if they like. http://www.coopsare open.com/ . A word to

the wise.sometimes a little common sense is the best policy....let

sleeping dogs lie.
