I'm about to change the A/F in my Bird and have a couple questions.
There's a petcock on top of the radiator with two lines running acroos
the top of the radiator. Can anyone tell me what it's for?
And, where is the coolant overflow container?

I think that is an air bleed, used when refilling the system. I don't
think there is an overflow container.

Keith,
On our 84FC, that small valve is a high point bleed that comes off the heater
core. There
is a flexible plastic line that you can stick down in the radiator neck so that
you don't lose
any antifreeze to the ground when you bleed the air out. There's no overflow
container on
our cooling system. Recommended AF level is 3/4" from the radiator neck opening
so
there is some room in the top for expansion as the engine heats up.

The petcock will release air out of the system when refilling. not sure there is
an overflow, can't say.

Keith,
So what kind of A/F are you going with?
I'm going to stay with with regular green A/F. I remember seeing a post
about using heavy duty A/F but all I can find is the regular stuff. So
I guess i'll just use the green Prestone that is available at Costco.
Any thoughs on this?

Don't forget the system conditioner, available at NAPA or equivalent auto parts
store. Get some checking strips too, to monitor your coolant ph.

I picked up some Fleetguard strips. The Fleetguard coolant comes
precharged with conditioner. But can you tell me where the other
tube from the petcock goes? The one on the right (facing the
radiator) is short enough to put in the radiator opening but I can't
reach the end of the one on the left side?

I am in the process of doing a complete colling system majot
maintenance: all new rad hoses, thermostat, all exposed cooling hoses
and overhaulin those darn Sporlans. I did some research on A/F as our
units use 84 quarts if you can get it all out. No matter what color or
brand you choose to use it must, at the very least, meet ASTM D4985.
Many of the brands on the shelf do not meet that standard. I went with
Wal Mart extended life coolant. Cheap and readily available. Made by
Old World Industries, the same people who make most of the OEM brands.
