Unless posted, it is against the law to used hazard lights (4-way Flashers) in a moving vehicle. Period! dot! Check your state laws, that is the way it is in my state for very good reasons. Reason: When you are using them, you have no turn signals! Think about it for a while. Driving rain, Horrid Snow, Bad fog, soft tire are all problems, they do not justify putting the rest of the community to risk by turning off your turn signals so the rest of us have no clue as to what your intentions are. Lotsa folks do it, a major peeve of mine. They have a false sense of security. I'M SAFE, MY 4 WAYS ARE ON. Jumps off soapbox. -- Pete Arnold Your mileage may vary. I believe CA DMV requires use of flashers when under 45 mph climbing hills where speed limit is higher. Tom McCarthy Poway CA --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, Peter T. On the rigs which share a brake and turn signal, the 4 ways go out when you apply the brakes. I like the Volvo ambers for that reason. I agree that if there was too much use of 4 ways, it would be a wolfcry thing. The fact that most drivers follow your law, my use of 4 ways attract attention. I think in California the law is you can not enter a road way unless you can maintain within 10 mph of the posted speed. The contents of the holster and ambiguity of laws provide the CHP a means to make a stop when they feel the motorist is a danger. I think when a judge gets a motorist in court with one of the ambigious tickets he can assume he is looking at an idiot. hope your information was not experienced based. In my State {Connecticut} it is against the law to travel with 4-ways on. Think of the common sense, do you really want to be driving with effectively no turn signals? Using them to "Limp off" the highway, proceed thru a thunder storm of rush to the hospital is not a reasonable excuse for someone to put another's life in harms way. I's sure that the members of the forum would not do the. It all those other folks, right? DO NOT believe me. Call you local State P.D. and ask them if it's legal to drive with your 4-ways on. George Washington A Masonic Brother 4-ways and their use - Pete Masterson - 04-22-2007 12:07 You should be aware that in California, the law requires that you must use a marked "turnout" if you are traveling significantly below the speed limit and have 5 or more vehicles following you. (My father wrote this law when he was in the state legislature.) Failure to comply with this law can result in a similar fine as a speeding ticket. No problem. I agree that 4 ways (hazard lights)cancel turn signals. However, I am still trying to figure out what " I'M SAFE, MY 4 WAYS ARE ON" in the final line of your original response to O'Conners post means. Just before jumping off the soap box. Are they on or off? I just read it one more time just in case. Most mountain grades have posted turns that further reduce the speed with a suggestion 25, 30,35mph . second gear and at 1800R's travel is a comfortable heatfree 35 mph. The same roads that have long stretches of straight incline, usuly have a passing lane for that section. The big fear with not allowing following traffic to pass is when one of the following cars try and pass in the oncomming lane. I asked a trucker today if he recalls the 5 car law your dad wrote. He said he understood it to state: 'If five or more cars are following and one or more of the five or more is a CHP officer, you must hit the turn out.'
