Getting to PT engine from bedroom - Scott Forman - 07-27-2007 12:35 Still trying to figure out how to access the front of the engine from the bedroom. I have twin beds. When I remove the night stand between the beds, these is plywood under it with no seams or "doors". Under the mattersses, there is insulation glued to the top of the plywood, so I cannot see it. I would rather not pull up all that insulation if I can avoid it, is that all one piece of wood under there or is there a seam somewhere? When I look into the engine compartment from the side, it looks like there is a small opening above the alternator. How do I get to it??? Scott Forman 86 PT38 Memphis Getting to PT engine from bedroom - Ryan Wright - 07-27-2007 18:49 I'd like to know an answer to this, too, as I need to have my alternator checked out and possibly replaced. Sure would save me on labor costs if I could say, "Here, go through this hatch." I have the same twin bed configuration as Scott. -Ryan '86 PT-40 8V92 Tri-Cities, WA On 7/27/07, Scott Forman <sforman@...> wrote: > > Still trying to figure out how to access the front of the engine from > the bedroom. At the rear of the coach was a wooden panel about 2.5 ft square that was screwed down. Once removed, there was a metal panel about 2 ft square that had to be removed. I guessing on the dimensions as it has been a while. Once you get the panel off it is still a bear to work as one is leaning down into the hell hole. To work on alternators--small diesel mechs crawled in over the batteries on the right side and got to it. Fat me was even able to wiggle in up there to tighten tension bolts. Regards, Jim Getting to PT engine from bedroom - Scott Forman - 07-28-2007 04:45 OK, I got in. 1) Lift off night stand 2) Find edges of the plywood panel in the middle. It extends a bit under the mattresses, you will need to remove them or tilt them up on their side. My bus has some heat insulation glued on top of the plywood, I had to peel it back until I found the seam. 3) Remove wood screws holding this panel on. On mine, they were placed randomly. 4) Remove plywood. You are now looking at a metal plate. Mine is the dark red primer color. 5) Remove the screws around the perimeter of the plate (there are a bunch). DO NOT remove the four bolts around the center, they hold on a head sheild on the engine side of the panel. 6) Pry plate off. You are now looking directly down on the alternator. I suggest doing this with a cold engine, as there is also an exhaust pipe running right past the opening.
