89SP cat3208-draining coolant question..only 6 gal so far - Ed Gardels - 11-06-2007 05:38

Group, I need to replace my coolant. Never done it before. Using the
drain spout on the bottom rad hose, I have only got 6 gal until it quit
draining. What else should I do to get the 15 to 20 gal out the book
says I should get.The chassis heater valves are open.
Thanks ahead for your help

>Ed I recently changed the coolant in Cat 3208T engine. I got about ten
gallons from the the radiator itself. Then I removed a couple of drain
plugs in the front of the engine. One is on the water pump the other
toward the bottom of the engine. There is also another pet cock to open
on some piping below the engine that goes to the radiator.

Then I removed the heater hoses in the front of the motorhome and
pushed them down below the engine level and drained out several more
galons. That was the most I could get out.

I then flushed with distilled water until all of the above lines and
drains ran free of antifreeze. This took about 2o gals of distilled
water but I knew I had all of the old coolant out. Of course I now had
some distilled water in the lines that would not drain. But that is
o.k. because you can add the antifreeze to it anyway.

Good luck.

John
