HELP--- generator wont stay running - Peggy & Ed McStay - 10-12-2007 04:12 gen will start and run for about 2seconds then stop. what is happening is the start -stop selonid closes off the fuel to the injector pump. now i can make the thing run if i reach over and hold the cutoff lever on the injector pump open. it will run all day. have looked at the oil pressure safety switch. have disconnected it and tried to run gen with the same results. what am i not looking at. need some ideas ed and peggy mcstay "lonesome dove" 35ft fc rb perkins engine with kohler gen. HELP--- generator wont stay running - chet geist - 10-12-2007 04:37 Ed, Try putting a charger on your generator battery and see if it will keep running. I had that same problem once and found out the solenoid wouldn't stay in due to low voltage. Just a thought. Are you guys going to make the Xmas L.S.B. rally in Kerrville? If not, your problem is either the voltage regulator or the brushes. Check the brushes first! I had the exact same problem as you with no power to the coach, & I made the mistake of just buying a new voltage regulator because it seemed easier to replace, $180 and it turned out it was the brushes, $20, and they were actually easier to replace once I found them. Now I have a spare voltage regulator I didn't really need. If you DO have power to the coach when you force the generator to run, then your problem is likely the coolant temperature switch or the oil pressure switch. I'd put my money on your brushes... -Ryan On 10/12/07, Peggy & Ed McStay > > gen will start and run for about 2seconds then stop. what is happening > is the start -stop selonid closes off the fuel to the injector pump. > now i can make the thing run if i reach over and hold the cutoff lever > on the injector pump open. it will run all day. have looked at the oil > pressure safety switch. have disconnected it and tried to run gen with > the same results. what am i not looking at. need some ideas > > ed and peggy mcstay > "lonesome dove" > 35ft fc rb > perkins engine with kohler gen. Fullenwider - 10-12-2007 08:39 > Hi Ed: The fuel solenoid is held open by power from the run contacts on the start solenoid on top of the starter and the contacts internal are bad. Replace that start solenoid and your problem should be cured. Be sure to re attach the wiring to the safeties. I had a leak on my linkage of my governor, so I got it rebuilt. When I reinstalled it, it was much more difficult to operate and the shutdown solenoid would not pull in, if I pushed it in by hand then it would stay in. I then encountered another problem where the generator would shut down after 30 minutes of operation. It was traced to a sensor near the radiator, a temp sensor I believe. Finally, it would quit altogether and not start up. The radiator fluid was just covering the top of the rad, but I guess that was not enough, as when I filled it to the top, I have not had any problems since. So what I have to offer is four checks - once generator is running - does your fan turn? If yes, then continue below, if no, then I would start with looking at the generator part. If yes, check for full radiator, check to ensure closed continiuty of oil pressure switch when stopped and that it opens with pressure. disconnect the water temperature switch, for the test. RALPH you are the one that had the correct answer to my problem. i installed a tempory wire from the battery to the start stop solenoid with a switch in line. as i started the generator i turned the switch on to supply 12 volts to the solenoid, generator ran great. while it was running i checked voltage at the run contact side of the starter solenoid,no voltage. as per ralphs idea i will replace the starter solenoid. i may even have one in all my spare parts, will have to look. again thanks to all who responded and may all your travels be safe. ed and peggy mcstay "lonesome dove" 83fc rear bath lake charles, louisiana |
