Driving lights -operation? - thomas_sorrentino - 10-14-2007 04:19

I'm in the process of trying to get my driving lights working. So far
I've figured out:
1.) the high beams have to be on
2.) the suspension has to be up
3.) one lens is clear the other is amber (is this normal)?
They won't swing down all the way without a little manual help.
On the air valve, there is a fitting that looks somewhat like a brake
bleeder fitting. What is the purpose of that? And is it adjustable?
When the switch is in position to put the lights down, air escapes from
it. When I cover the escaping air with my hand, the lights swing up.
And where do I buy a new one since I broke the old one?

Tom,

Here are some notes that I saved some time ago. Hope this helps. Please keep
us posting on your project.

First note:
Alan there is a switch that the light has to touch to turn the light on. The

light can be adjusted to hit it. If the cylinder is bad it is a Clippard.
Mine is an SDR-20-3 & I got two new ones for sixty dollars for both. That
made
mine work fine after I adjusted them to come the whole way down. I don't
think you can repair them.

Second note:
These lights to operate.
Dash Switch ON
Headlights Must be on
High beam must be on
Coach must be at ride hieght.

If The lights won't lower check micro switches mouted on light
brackests.
Air control valves are under the front electricial panel.
And of course last of all the air cylinders.
The bulbs are replaceable, as for as the lens????
Good Luck

Curt,

Thanks! When I have all the switches in the correct positions, the
lights just don't swing down far enough. I'd say they come down about
50%. When I manually push them back to hit the micro switch they come
on fine and stay on. I think my problem is more of an air cylinder,
or adjustment problem. Thats why I'm trying to figure out about the
air escaping out of the brake bleeder looking thing on the air
cylinder.

Driving lights -operation? - Tom McCarthy - 10-21-2007 10:44

Coincidently, I was checking all the lights the other night. I tried
the Fog/Driving light switch. Nothing. At Holland Motor Homes, I
asked them to chek the bulbs and/or power. They said the Fog/driving
lights came on with HIGH beams! Why would anyone want these lights
meant for fog on when high beams do not work well in fog?

Just to see what cars do, I checked all I had. All makes, years and
models worked only on low beams and never on high. Those include '07
BMW X3, '01 BMW, '06 Mini Cooper, '07 Astin Martin.

Now I read you guys saying yours only come on with high beams, too.
Why? I thought somebody reversed mine at some point. What is the
logic, or lack thereof, in this setup?

Driving lights -operation? - Pete Masterson - 10-21-2007 10:49

Whether it makes sense, or not, that's how it works. I guess they
consider them "driving" lights. When I had an MG-B sports car, I had
high intensity driving lights that came on with high-beam unless
their separate switch was off. "Fog" lights are normally set to work
with low beam.

Also the rear "landing lights" only operate when the coach is in
reverse. Not much help when I wanted some light to unhook my toad --
I sure didn't want to put the bus in reverse to then work behind it!
I plan to re-wire the rear lights someday....

Tommy my lights are fog lights and they only come on if I have my main
lights on and set to low beam. My manual says that if I had driving lights
in place of the fog lights the driving lights would only come on with the
main lights on and high beam setting.

Driving lights -operation? - Tom McCarthy - 10-21-2007 11:14

Rob, the switch reads "Fog/Driving Lights." From this information,
the two apparently are mutually exclusive. I rarely need high beams
but often get nighttime fog in CA. I asked HMH if they could switch
the operation to FOG and low beams, just like my fleet of autos.
