Lone Star Birds Holiday Happening, Tech seminar: Troubleshooting 101 - Ernest Ekberg - 12-01-2007 07:22

Ralph Fullenwider gave a tech seminar on troubleshooting various
problems with our coaches. We had a ll the guys in one end of the room
and the ladies preparing the Sat meal on the other end.
We have owners from the early FCs to the newer 90s vintage.
Very well presented.

Dear Ernie: Here's a problem I would like to get troubleshooted!
When the ignition key is turned on in my 88 FC sometimes the starter
will not engage or run. Seems related to voltage sometimes but
sometimes just waiting a minute and turning the key and starter will
turn and start engine. It seems not to happen if I have 14 V on the
guage but intermittently when I don't.
I have replaced the ignition switch, the starter switch solenoid
and checked all cables for tightness and corrosion.
Two batteries are new and the four house batteries are a few years
old. Before I replace the four, any ideas or suggestions?

Hi John:

From the ignition switch to the start solenoid, there are a couple of
connectors under the dash area that the voltage passes through, and there
is a circuit breaker thrown into the mix as well. Have you checked and
cleaned those connectors? The problem seems to be in the control circuit
rather than the power circuit going to the start solenoid. Also need to run
a load test on the batteries, before replacing them.

John, when you have electrical problems on a Bird be sure to include cleaning
your ground connections in addition to your B+ connections. A number of elusive
problems have been solved by removing ground straps, cleaning the connections
and making sure they are good.
