Gardner, Texas dealers can issue you a paper rtag. But when we sell a
vehicle here, the tags stay with the vehicle. I doubt if anyone would stop you.

I was wondering how people deal with getting a new purchased Bird
home. If I were to go half way across the country to look at one, I
would rather pay up and drive it home than go to the expense and time
of another round trip. Naturally I couldn't get it licenced and
registered in my home state, New Jersey, without being there, so what
method of temporary licencing is available? Do you obtain it from the
resident state or the purchase state? I expect it varies from state to
state, but today I am interested in Texas. I don't have a friend with
dealer plates, and playing with the law isn't in my plan, so a
legitimite solution is what I am looking for?

Any experiences out there?

Gardner,
When I purchased my BB it was located in CT about 6 miles from the MA border...
What I did was get it insured by my agent and then went to CT MV and had a
temporary tag to transport the BB to my location... The Tag was a paper one...

Larry,
Thanks. I sent a query to the Texas DMV, but I expect it to take a
while. I can't find exactly what I want on their site; Only things
for commercial vehicles crossing the state.

I have little vacation time so if I do find a new coach I don't
want to waste days stuck in some DMV office without the required
documentation/identification.

Gardner,

I bought my current 84FC out of Texas from a dealer and he provided a
temporary tag issued by the state of Texas. I suppose if it is a
private sale, you(or the owner) could get one of these also.

A guy I work with bought a box truck in Texas recently. The Texas
plate went with the truck and he drove home with it. Don't know if
plates stay with the RV in Texas too.

Come to Illinois. There are 2 nice pushers for sale within 50 miles
of here.

If I'm not mistaken, most states give you 30 days to document a newly
purchased motor vehicle. However, you must have insurance to drive
it home. You can get the insurance to give you a policy and fax a
copy of the binder to you at the purchase site (assuming they can
receive a fax).

Agreed. Seems like if you had proof of ownership (bill of sale) and proof of
insurance (temporary card or policy) you should be good to go with some
reasonable time frame to get it officially registered.

All you have to do in Texas is have current insurance on the Bird. If
you come to Texas and buy call your insurance company and have them
issue you a binder and fax it to you for the Bird and you can drive
it home. Then you can go to the title office in you home state and
have it transfered into your name. If you get stopped show the
trooper your buyers agreement and insurance binder.

I purchased my coach from a dealer in Texas. I was given a
'temporary' Texas plate (actually a piece of cardboard). I was
stopped in Nevada by a highway patrolman who inquired about the lack
of a license plate and I showed him the Texas "paper" plate (that was
in the front window) and he was satisfied. He then asked about the
coach as it was an unusual model -- he admitted that he mostly was
curious about the RV... I drove through parts of Texas, Oklahoma,
Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California and was only stopped
the one time... (and had it been a more common RV probably wouldn't
have even been stopped then). I then was able to register the coach
with the appropriate paperwork (from the dealer) at my local DMV.

Some states (California) give you 10 days.

Be sure to arrange appropriate liability coverage with your insurance
agent before you take possession. In many states, you can get in more
trouble for lack of insurance than for lack of registration.
