Question on a DC problem - curlesw - 01-04-2008 18:09

Got a question on a DC problem. We were sitting in the Bird and all of
sudden, the lights starts to "flick" every 10 secs and a "clicking"
noise was coming from the right load center. Upon investigation, the
clicking noise was coming from a small black part which looks like a
relay. I have a picture but can't post it here.

Anyone know what this is and what could be the problem. Did the part
just fail or is there another problem somewhere else. I posted a
picture and placed a picture of the part in the album Curles_1985 PT-40.

Thanks much.

Wayne,

I cannot tell the pin number from the picture, but on my wiring
diagram for the Right Front Load Center, pin #1 has as 10ga black
wire attached at the buss and going to a 30A fuse holder part number
2272839. This is for an outside freezer. Do you have anything
plugged into the bay or do you have an outside freezer? The part in
the picture looks like it might be an auto-resetting breaker so maybe
someting is pulling too much load causing a trip, then it resets and
cycles again resulting in the clicking sound. If this is the case,
either the part is bad or you have too much load. Check the current
draw with a meter.

Wayne,
Your "small black part" is probably a thermal circuit breaker. When too
much current goes through this type of breaker it will open the circuit. As
the breaker cools from no current it resets and closes the circuit again. This
will of course go on and on. Two obvious possibilities are that the circuit
breaker has failed or that that circuit has too much load. There are
certainly other possibilities but that is where I would start. NAPA may have
these
breakers or be able to order one for you.

Question on a DC problem - Mike Hohnstein - 01-05-2008 03:57

Sounds like a clicking circuit breaker, which of course indicates a short in the
wire that the CB supplies. I hate that when it happens, and it does in a
complicated machine that spends time on the road being subjected to the pot
holes and expansion joints on the nations highways. Start by identifying the
offending circuit, then using a continuity tester locate both ends of the
suspect wire. Once that has been accomplished, it's a matter of either finding
the location of the "rub thru" and repairing or running a new wire. It's better
to find the location of rub thru so the problem doesn't reoccur. Ain't it great
puttering with a "vintage 'bird?

I have drawings for both '85 PT36 and PT40. They show six pairs of
ckt. breakesr for a total of 12. Looks like you have a 13th fact.
installed
breaker. I'm wondering what extra option you have calling for that
breaker.

Thanks to everyone, I had never seen a breaker like this before.

The part was REALLY hot, so I disconnected it and let it cool. I
think it maybe the breaker of outside Vista lights which was an
option. They have been a bit troublesome and do have some exposed
wires...will need to either be replace or just remove altogether.

Thanks again to all for the info, I have enough info to tackle ths
prblem.
