Battery box corrosion - amweath - 02-18-2008 04:25 When checking the electrolyte levels on my generator battery I foung a ring of corrosion/electroltsis around the bottom of the battery box where the rubber pad meets the side of the box. The battery sits on the pad. I don't really understand what causes this, or how to prevent it. Any knoledge out there on this subject? Art Weatherly Riverside Ca '85 PT36. Battery box corrosion - Pete Masterson - 02-18-2008 06:33 Sounds like your batteries are 'boiling over' during the charge cycle, allowing battery acid to run down the side of the case and corrode the battery box. The battery chargers in the older WLs are notorious for doing this -- and it can seriously shorten the life of the batteries. To prevent this, you might consider upgrading your charger/inverter (or just your charger) to a modern three stage type.

I'd remove the batteries and check each one for cracks of body seperation between the lid and the battry box first before I spent any money on battery chargers. You can buy a battery cleaner solution which will change color to let you know you have a leaking battery. I will check for cracks though. I've already replaced that batt. once because of a crack. Art Weatherly Riverside Ca. '85PT36 |
