ZF Transmission filters - birdshill123 - 03-06-2008 11:54 I want to change the tranny oil and the filter in our 88 FC ( ZF transmission. I have 2 questions.: I think the filter is a ZF 4139298038. Where can I obtain one?? How much ATF will I need? My Blue Box says the capacity is 47 quarts but obviously you cannot drain much of the oil. I seem to recall a post some time ago where it was listed as 5 gallons. Any help appreciated. Bruce 1988 FC ZF Transmission filters - John McGinnis - 03-06-2008 13:32 Bruce, I just had my ZF filter changed yesterday at our local Peterbilt dealer, I know they used a 5 gallon pail of Dextron but I don't have the filter number with me it is on the bus in storage. If we don't get the 9" snow storm tonight I'll ride by the bus tomorrow and check my receipt for the filter number. I get mine from Precision Transmission in Colmar, PA Phone 215- 822-8300 I have also got them from Harbor Diesel and Equipment in Long Beach, CA Phone 562-591-5665 The only way you can get more fluid out is by draining the cooler. Bruce 1988FC ZF Transmission filters - birdshill123 - 03-06-2008 14:56 I found that filter online made by Fleetguard ( Cummins) for around $28.00. Someone told me it sells for over $50.00 Youch!! Is that correct?? Thanks Bruce 1988 FC35 ZF Transmission filters - birdshill123 - 03-06-2008 14:59 I almost forgot: Where did you get the pan gasket? Or did you reuse the old one? Bruce 1988 FC35 ZF Transmission filters - pattypape - 03-06-2008 15:46 No need to remove the pan , just a plug and the filter, I used the real German filter, about $35/40. filter gasket included. It is a mesh screen some just wash it out with fuel. Service centers locations at http://www.zf.com. Or try this cut and paste. http://www.zf.com/content/en/import/zf_konzern/startseite/service/firmen verzeichnis/servicenetzwerk/ServiceNetzwerk_Ergebnis.jsp? lookup=2260&lookupLeg=8757 Drains just under 5 gallons, Holds a total of about 8 gallons This is the only instance, that I have ever used synthetic, Castrol, Transydn. about $35/gallon. Hopeing this handles the heat better. Wait two years and changed it again, now mostly Synthetic.
