Need some air ride seats - Cris Wiedaman - 03-19-2008 23:42

Hi,
My wife is ill with a muscular/nerve dissorder and 6 hurniated disks.
We want to ba able to go on vacation with our dog and 2 year old. So, I
found an RV that I could afford which happens to be a '78 Bluebird. I
do not know the shape of everything in it but am convinced that I can
make it work for us.

I am looking for atleast 2 AirRide seats to replace the ones in the
front and possibly 2 additional ones in back where there is a bench at
this time. I'm located in Cincinnati OH and I believe there to be a
junk yard somewhere north of me that would have such seats but have no
clue how to contact them. Does anyone have any ideas?

Chris, on many bigrigs the seat is a seat. the pedistal is
stationary or airride. used airride pedistals are about $50. at Big
truck wrecking yards. You will notice that Bigrig airride seats or
pedistals have a forward and back float (adjustable)to hold the
driver stationary when the rig jerks through the gears. You then
need to find air to run the seat. The cat compressor builds air for
front brakes, rearbrakes and auxillary purpose. the three are
isolated so failure with one will not render the other useless. be
shure to hookup to the correct port. Remember that when the air
bleeds down the seat loses height and bounce. There are some
spring loaded pedistals out there with adjustable spring tensioners
on juice brake (hydrolic) trucks that may work well to make her
comfortable.

There is more to repowering (replacing the engine with faster) then
you think. I look at the $ variable first when making a upgrade
decision. A good used diesel engine worthy to pull a FC cost about
$10,000.00 then you need a new trans and driveline. The guy you
bought the bus from just completed the most cost effective first
step in making the bus go faster. Save the sign.

Hi Gregory,
Thanks for this advice. I will have to use it. I had an unfortunate
experience with trying to buy the old bluebird. The Used car sales
man at Big Bobs RV said some repairs are needed. Well this was the
understatement. It was a trash heap with a good engine. I will go
into more details in a later posting. Even the sales man admitted
they put it up for auction because those bidding on it could not tell
the real problem. It was like a cabin in the woods that someone left
the windows open for the last 15 years.

I will still get an RV but this time I will be more cautious :-)

Some time the best place to start is with a class C. The driveline
mechanicals are avaliable at pepboys and the RV side is readily
found at Campingworld. I see great deals on C's for less than
$7,500. That may be a good place for you to learn what you want
when you eventually buy a Coach. You started off wanting to make
major renovations wich is a common cry but an ill advised move.
When you get a camper, run it for a while and learn your needs prior
to any change.

Its way cool that you plan to facilitate your wifes travel enjoyment
that her condition would limit without the use of an RV.

One last word of advice:
When a dealer calls him self BigBob, HappyHarry or the like any
surprise you find is kinda your fault for not looking past his big
nose and floppy shoes at the bus.

I have been inside the coach that is offered by Les Grey. That was the first coach that we wanted to buy- but after I got back home after inspecting the coach, Les decided to keep her for a few more years. Very nice, and stored inside his large shop.

Chris, When you mentioned the number of $6000 in your first post I
think we all had similar thoughts. Hoping against hope that you in
fact would be finding something different then what you did. Be
philosophical about it and move forward. If you check the Bill Board
you can get a sense of what these BB's are selling for. You'll either
get one already pretty well fixed up or buy one that needs work. In
the end I believe most of the fellows would agree that its going to
take about $25K to have a "nice" FC. If you want show room perfect
more and less for a diamond in the ruff but you get the picture. You
might "luck in" to something nice under $20K but if you do you better
be ready to move quickly. There are a couple pretty nice looking
coaches listed on the Bill Board so you might do some talking to the
owners and perhaps feel and touch to get some idea or what is out
there. I've had travel trailers and 5th wheels and they each have
their advantages. Never owned a Class C so can't ditto Greg's
suggestion but he seems to know what he is talking about so I'd
consider that as well.

Chris, Just and example. There is a 1980 FC listed on the Bill Board
by Les Grey. I don't know the fellow or the BB but he is asking
$25,000 best offer. That coach looks very clean. He has no pictures
of the interior. New tires etc. If I was interested (and didn't
already own one) I'll be looking at that one. There are other which
maybe as nice or nicer I don't know but I think that gives you a
reasonable idea as to what you are looking at for the money.
