Klunking noise - bubblerboy64 - 04-28-2008 03:03
If I have to brake a little quickly there is a fairly loud "klunk"
sound which occurs each and every time. Seems to be coming from the
wheel or suspension area. Brakes work fine, previous owner said the
bus as always done this. In my process of repair and improvements, I
thought I should address this. Any idea's.

And so do I if I really need to brake hard. No pull or anything else unusual. It does not happen any other time. I have had my front end inspected and cannot find the source. Please advise if you find anything.

Mine too. It does tend to pull a little to one side when it
happens, but not badly. I had things checked out and they found
nothing.

Well, I guess I won't worry about it then but it seems like
something that loud (and apparently common) would have a known cause.
Maybe some one will chip in here with answer.

Folks, let me toss this out - for what it is worth; there has been a number of discussions over recent years that address air brake slack adjusters - and possible control arm issues. Just a thought. If you do a Google search "brake slack adjusters," there are numerous articles and diagrams - including results of NTSB accident investigations involving air brake-equipped buses and trucks. It is possible that a faulty control arm could be the culprit.

My 78 FC 35' make the very same noise under heavy braking. The NTSB
article refers to vehicles equipted with automatic slack adjusters.
From what I have read on this thread all the wanderlodges are too old
to have automatic slack adjusters. I must admit that I adjust my
brakes a lot. If I am going to slide under the bus to check the
brakes I might as well adjust them.

Joe,
I have manual slack adjusters and both myself and a qualified
truck shop verified that they are set correctly. I have some ideas
as to the cause of the klunk, but I need to do a bit more research
before sticking my neck out..

I'm not sure when the automatic slack adjusters appeared (sometime in the 80's) but my coach has them. So, "all the Wanderlodges" aren't too old to have them.
FWIW, I've never heard any klunking noise from the brakes -- but a few things in the refrigerator sometimes klunk during a vigorous stop.
