My project this weekend was the installation of the insulation (Stephen
Bartles product). Any of you FC owners if you have not you should. I
believe that there is practically no sound out of the dog house area.
(In addition to the foam I have a heavy cover over the outside of the
dog house). The only area that seems to be transmitting sound is now
the floor area drivers side. Anyone have a way to handle that? I
certainly can live with what I have now but if there is more that can
be done why not. Not looking to make a Lexus out this thing but I
wouldn't mind getting just a bit closer.

John, when you insulated the doghouse, did you remove the base of the doghouse and insulate that?
If you didn't then that is why you have sound and will have heat transfer.

Hello John,
I am in the process of replacing the flooring after having removed the doghouse
for valve
lashing, re-insulation. On the doghouse I used 2", 2# sq./ft. quilted fiberglass
and lead
sandwich with mylar face. This stuff is very good but very heavy too. I was able
to obtain
it locally from Soundown so shipping charges were eliminated. I used Permatex
High
Temp RTV Silicone Gasket Maker to reinstall the doghouse. I purchased it at a
heavy truck
shop parts dept. About $15 a tube. I used about 1/2 tube
What am I using for a sub floor in the driver's area?
I am using the same sub floor throughout the front of the coach. From the the
driver's
side of the accelerator and brake pedals back to the salon side of the mid-door
entry way
where it meets ceramic floor (its all level). All the furniture and seat mounts
and seat belts
have been removed. I did not remove the built in couch. The vertical carpeting
is in good
shape so that is not being touched. This will save a lot of work and money.
The sub floor material is from Soundown it is 1/2" thick 2#/sq. ft. It One side
is dense
foam and the other is dense mass loaded vinyl. This should be installed vinyl
side up. The
Soundown rep stated some people make the mistake of putting vinyl side down and
this
defeats the sound deadening/vibration damping properties. The following link

The finish floor is Dupont Laminate Henna Hickory, http://tinyurl.com/4gf39p . I
have
installed this material in the past and like it a lot. The finish floor needs
1/4" clearance
around the perimeter. Both floors will rest in place without fasteners or glue
and butt
nicely into the vertical carpet. If I ever need to get under the floor or, God
forbid, remove
the doghouse again, it will be relatively easy.

I pulled up my carpet and put a layer of insulation under it. Not
very scientific, but effective at deadening sound through the floor.

Ernie, I did not remove the dog house. I would have had to pull up
the carpet to do so. The other part of this is that I have no room
under the floor where the floor and the dog house meet to put
insulation. This is likely due to the fact that this is not the
original engine for this BB. The edge of the dog house is all but
touching the engine so any further sound deadening will have to be
from the inside of the coach. The carpet was done by the previous
owner right before I purchased the bus last year. I hated to get into
ripping that up at this time. I am thinking about making up a section
of removable carpet to lay over the carpet more or less like a floor
mat as a temporary fix at this time. At some point I might get into
removing the dog house and at that time I would likely be up to
replacing the carpet (again). At 61 years of age and having worked
really hard on this thing for almost a year I am not in the mood to
take on any more major projects for a while. I know that not all
that I have done is as perfect as others (with more experience and
knowledge) would have been able to accomplish but then again this ole
bus is a first for me. So I have cut some corners and made some
compromises to get it the best I can within reason. If you consider
what it is, the age and inexperience of the old boy that owns it plus
the time period that I have owned it I think I've done pretty well.
My goal is to get it "pretty good" and then drop back as time and
money permits and then nail down any mistakes or imperfections. (If I
feel like it) That's the beauty of owning an old one. No guilt in
imperfections. In the back of my mind Ernie I would like to think at
some time maybe I could get out to your neck of the woods and let you
do it right. Can't predict the future but its a thought. I know you
guys understand what I am saying. I am basically a perfectionist in
this but with advancing years I am now able to live with compromises
which is what this "Big Napper" is. Steve suggested that the way to
do this job was to pull the dog house out but I just didn't have it
in me at this time. Maybe some of you guys understand. Especially
you fellows with some years behind ya. Maybe all this comes down to
saying I need a break from working on this bus.

Hi John, I can appreciate being in my 6th decade, also. It really takes 2 individuals to remove the lid to the dog house and the base. One person could do it, but with the size and weight of that thing, would kill ya the rest of the day.
If you get out this way we will help you out. Shane is due out in Aug and I'm gonna "fix" his coach up, also.
