Tach Sending Unit - 6V92TA - Glenn Allen - 07-01-2008 07:59 I am trying to issolate why my tach is not working. I am starting with the sending unit. After a little help, I have finally found the sending unit. The unit looks like a gearbox with an A-Frame clamp holding it to the engine block. On top of the gearbox is a Hex column about 3-4" long with an flat-1" dia circular electrical connector on top with two wires exiting. Has anyone performed any trouble shooting on this type of sending unit? Do I remove the A-Frame clamp to check the gear box? Is there an easy method to check the pulse output short of using a scope? Thanks, Glenn Allen 1986 PT-40 Marietta, GA Tach Sending Unit - 6V92TA - Glenn Allen - 07-01-2008 08:08 I have found installation instructions for this type of sending unit at : http://www.tpub.com/content/misc_manuals_3/TM-9-2815-224-34-P/TM-9- 2815-224-34-P0333.htm Now I need to determine if it is working... If the problem with the tach is that it reads anything but the correct engine rpm; in other words, it's all over the place, you might want to look at battery voltage before hunting the solution elsewhere. I've found that if my battery voltage is not in the high 12s, the tach becomes unreliable. This can happen if alternator output is off for whatever reason, dirty connections, bad batteries, and the like.
