Altenator mounting on the PT'S - thomas_sorrentino - 08-24-2008 01:59

I've had a random metallic pinging (sort of like a loose exhaust clamp)
sound from my motor for a few months now. It didn't seem to be affected
by rpm or anything else and I couldn't figure out where it was coming
from.
I had the coach in for the yearly NYS safety inspection and I asked
them to see if they could figure it out. One of the mechanics noticed
the end of fins on the altenator were shiny (hitting on something!). It
turns out that the mounting bolt must have been loose for a long time
and the ears on the altenator were extremely worn (oblong hole) the
bolt was worn thin and the mounting bracket itself was worn. It's all
fixed now, but I thought I'd pass on the info. to put it on your lists
for things to check.

Tom, my belts were always loose and I inspected the brackets and found what you did. I tightened them up and no problems, since. My FC had a loose alternator, also. Vibration??
