ShurFlo 5.7 - Ryan Wright - 12-10-2008 15:58
Hi folks,
I've got a problem with my relatively new ShurFlo 5.7 water pump.
ShurFlo doesn't know what to tell me, other than to send it back to
them, but before I do I'd like to see if anyone here has experienced
similar behavior.
The pump runs for about 30 seconds, then cuts out for a couple of
seconds as if it's reached it's target pressure despite my faucet
being wide open. Then it runs for 5-10 seconds, cuts out, and repeats
this behavior indefinitely. If I open more faucets, I can hear the
pump boost it's operating speed and it runs slightly longer between
cutting out. After a few minutes of this on & off behavior, the stops
become more abrupt and I can hear a relay inside the pump flicking off
during each cut.
Anyway, I'm assuming the pump is faulty and will be returning it to
ShurFlo, but I did want to ask here first. I thought these pumps were
supposed to adjust their speed in real time to deliver just the amount
of water needed, not shut down entirely? My intention is to buy a new
one right now and keep this one as a spare after ShurFlo replaces it,
but I'm also concerned of the remote possibility I bought too much
pump for my coach's plumbing system and a new one won't behave any
better. What do you think?

Hi Ryan,
What they didn't tell is that they've had a some problems with these
pumps. In all capacities. I am on my 3rd 4.0 model in less than 6
months. All of them start & then stop with no valve shut off.
They just quit. There is an adjustment in the pressure sensitive
switch but they won't tell me how to adjust it. They just say to send
ot back to them for a replacement.
Best of luck with yours.

wonder if it is delivery restriction issue? or air cavitating the
pump on supply side. if it acts diff with varing levels in the pot
tank, could prove delivery issue ???? is there a backflow valve or
ball in the end of the pickup????

Thanks Terry. That's very frustrating - us owners are out the $20 in
fees to ship the darn thing every time. And after 3 years of this game
the warranty expires and I guess we're just SOL...
Are there any equally nice pumps with the variable flow setup that
actually last?
I can tell you this much... I'm buying a second pump before I ship
this one back, and putting valves in and a pump selection switch. So
the next time a pump dies while I'm trying to take a shower, I can
flip a switch and the hot backup pump will roar to life and keep me
going.

ShurFlo 5.7 - freewill2008 - 12-10-2008 18:33
Ryan - We've been through two 4.0 pumps and a 5.7, similar problems.
Shurflo sent us new pumps but it turned out we had two problems with
the pumps.
First, the 4.0 Shurflo pumps ran as you described.
Second, The 5.7 had problems AND it drew more power than our bus was
designed for. The BB pump breaker was 8 amps while the 5.7 needs 10
amps. I had to install a bigger breaker and go up one wire size.
Before returning the pump, do this: Put a volt meter on the power
lead from the bus at the pump. Run the pump and note the voltage.
If the voltage goes up as the pump stops, return the pump. If the
voltage goes down as the pump stops, look for a problem between the
battery and the pump (breaker, wiring, any pump control devices
installed by BB).
After three Smart Sensor pumps we had Shurflo send us the non-
electronic version of the 5.7 (it is sold as a marine wash-down pump)
and used their big stainless accumulator tank. Works great. The
pump starts when the accumulator is down rather than every time you
open a fawcett.

The pressure adjustment is the silver phillips head screw in the
center of the pump housing dome. Tighen for higher pressure, loosen
for lower pressure. Its a simple spring-over setup. The screw sets
preload on the spring. The pump is designed for a specific pressure
range so it would be good to use a pressure guage and not get too far
off the factory specification.

ShurFlo 5.7 - david brady - 12-11-2008 02:36
Sadly, I'm on my second one too. The later pumps, after 9/2006
have a pressure adjustment screw. There's a cover on the
end of the pump, the cover will have 5 screws. The center
screw is either philips or torx. That screw adjusts the internal
pressure sensor. If your cover only has 4 screws, then you have
an old pump, and it's not adjustable. My first pump exhibited
the symptoms Ryan describes, I was able to adjust the pressure
to cure the problem, but the pump didn't last long after that. My
second pump has given good service so far (slightly over year so
far, yippee).

Sounds like the pressure sensor in the unit is faulty. I don't know if there's a field repair possible -- but ShurFlo will probably replace the pump under warranty.
