Proper way to tow a Wanderlodge - jburgessx2 - 03-01-2009 04:13

Just to satisy my curiosity, I would like to know the proper way to tow
my 85 PT40. I don't plan on having it towed but it would be nice to
know if the situation arises - it never hurts to plan ahead. And,
sometimes the tow truck folks don't know or think they know and they
are wrong.

real big truck with a wheel lift or stinger be sure to tell them it
has a 5 foot setback front axle and weighs 40,000 lbs
disconnect drive shaft OR pull rear drive axles Drive shaft is cleaner
but is Necessary to climb under coach to disconnect drive shaft

TAKE APPROPRIATE PRECAUTIONS OR SOMEONE WILL DIE

take out wallet
leave credit card with driver

The best way and least likely to cause any damage is to load it on a
low-boy trailer and take it where you want it. No drive shaft
disconnects or possible damage to front generator going over bumps.

Towing a WL is a difficult problem. My owner's manual refers to "towing hooks" that require removing part of the bumpers to reach. (It's pretty significant disassembly.) The older WLs (without the fiberglass end caps) _might_ have better tow connections at the front (check the owner's manual).
The transmission is not 'towable' without damage. So, you'd also need to remove the drive shaft between the transmission and the differential. The orientation of the drive shaft with the u-joints must be carefully noted and preserved as reconnecting in a different orientation may cause an unbalanced situation that can tear things apart when it's put back together.
It's generally advisable to "tow" a Wanderlodge on some sort of low-boy trailer.

Last March I had to have my bird hauled. Although it was exciting it
really was not a pleasurable event. The tow service put it on a
LandAll/HaulAll. They aired up the bus to load it, then dumped the air
and chained her down. I had Good Sam Roadside & Tow it cost the
insurance $1500 to tow it home to our desired service center
approximately 50 miles. The insurance paid every dime. The tow
service refused to haul it with his wrecker even though it would have
handled it, he stated it was a great risk to the transmission, rearend
and fuel tank so he would only haul it on the landall.

Pete,

On our '95's the section that covers the tow hooks is held on with 4
nuts & bolts. It's not a big deal. Count on something getting broke,
scrathed or crushed.

Ask me how I know. Got stuck in mud at the Tampa
RV Supershow. Steve Mitchell pulled me out with his
Hummer.

Ernie do you like coachnet? I just got an offer from them to
administrate a club discount which seemed real good so I went to
their site to check it out and see if any other club was offered a
discount. The discount stood true until I tried to buy it at full
price and was not able to. Kind makes me wonder what game is played
in time of need. I may be too synical?
