Using Trans. Retarder & Jake Brake - Curt Sprenger - 10-21-2009 04:02 This question came up some time ago..."can the Trans. Retarder and the Jake Brake be operational at the same time. I have not tried both, yet...but will the next time out. The two are independent. Will be an interesting test. I'll watch the trans. temp. gauges to see if they get up to the usual retarder only temps. I'm thinking the temps. will be less. Might be too much brake on the down hills.àCurt Sprenger 1987 PT38 8V92 "MacAttack Racing" Anaheim Hills, CA Using Trans. Retarder & Jake Brake - gregory O - 10-21-2009 04:23 Jake stopping power is rated using horsepower. wonder if there is a hp rate for the trans retarder on your allison??? would you add the two or multiply. I had a four cylinder jeep 1999 that would down shift on the flat to maintain 70mph. I used the air conditioner compressor as a jake and always wondered if turning on the headlights would slow it down even more. I read in the operator's manual that "Extreme torque loads can be produced in the range section, damaging the transmission".
