1979 3208 Starter and Solenoid - Henry Claeys - 02-19-2010 12:43

Two questions: (1) Any links, or leads, to where I may purchase a
starter and solenoid for a caterpillar 3208 NA? (2) Any unique issues,
to watch out for, when removing and replacing these items? Thanks,

1979 3208 Starter and Solenoid - Robert Johannesen - 02-19-2010 14:38

Henry - some times I had to loosen the exhaust on the starter side to get the starter off. Then I made a long extension to get the rear inboard bolt out of the starter. Most any starter shop that deal with trucks can rebuild it. I almost bought a rebuilt spare and the owner who bought my 78 FC 31 did get one before he went to Costa Rica in it.

Robert. The bus is parked in a remote area where a stay over a day is
problematic. If I could arrive with a working starter, and solenoid,
then I could conduct the repair relatively rapidly and move the bus to a
more convenient service area. So I still need leads on how to locate a
new, used, or rebuilt starter and solenoid. I really appreciate your
tips though, and thanks for your help. Henry@... and at

If you get really hosed for someone to fix a starter, Robert is the king. He rebuilt a Leece-Neville for my 6v92. I felt sorry for the flywheel. Perfect work on starters and alternators.

Henry,

Have you tried Burton's Truck & Trailer Parts? They always seem to have a good
supply of parts. There's four of their stores in McAllen and if they don't have
it, they could point you to a good local source.

Mike, temp here today is 79f and cloudy, looks like rain tomorrow. We leave here on lst and go to Clyde's for alternator repairs and general look over underside. Let me know when you go to work-camp; I will come stay there and provide moral support. Sheraton brunch today and much groceries. Keep well.

1979 3208 Starter and Solenoid - Chuck Wheeler - 02-22-2010 02:23

I am late in this discussion, but are you
sure that you have a bad starter? I thought I had a starter problem when
we first got our Wanderlodge but when I measured the voltage dtop from the
battery to the starter when it was trying to turn over the engine it I measured
around 4 VDC drop. I had new cables made up and it would start without
turning over. (Still does)
