Are the threads 1/4" or 1/2"? How do you get to the dash gauges to replace one? I have never been behind there. The back of the dash is accessable by removing the multitude of phillips head screws around the edges of the dash.
Gently lift the dash up and you will be able to see what you need to do to get to the gauges.I would recommend you shut off your 12 volt power before hand.
