Everyone needs a good virus protection program - mbulriss - 06-11-2010 01:14 Seems like several of our long time members have gotten a viagra email generating virus lately which sends viagra advertisements to all of their email contacts. We can't protect from spam against validated member addresses with full posting privileges. Everyone needs to have a good virus scan program on their computers. There are a lot of good freeware programs out there to help protect your computer (and your friends). AVG and Zone Alarm are two popular programs that can help protect against viruses or hidden trojan programs from accessing the internet from your computer without your permission. If you don't have a virus protection program, please get one. Thanks, Mike Bulriss - moderator 1991 WB40 "Texas Minivan" San Antonio, TX Everyone needs a good virus protection program - Jo-Ski - 06-11-2010 10:00 We haven't used the freeware version of AVG (from WallData), but for some years now, Stew and I have used the pay-for version of AVG, which gives you a lot more protection and features. A two-year license for two computers is quite reasonable (about $80, I think)--which I believe is far more reasonably priced than the yearly Norton or McAffee upgrades. Plus AVG far superior those programs, which used to interfere with my other programs or the system all the time. Also better tech support--those folks are great--very responsive. They'll even send you a CD for your initial installation (e.g., if you have a slow dial-up connection), after which you download the frequent updates from the Web, which are pretty regular, due to the unfortunate reality that the baddies are out there constantly trying to mess with us.
All in all, AVG's the best!

And, perhaps, I should have reworded my comment to say that the AVG pay-foreditionsimply provides "even more protection and some additional features." I have heard from several other friends that AVG free-edition provides all they need. I guess with all them 24/7 hackers out there (and my worry-wart tendency to feel vulnerable to them), I tend to go for as many extras asI can, so in my mind, I guess I'm buying a little extra peace-of-mind. But, in terms of not interfering with your programs and OS, doesn't it seem that AVG-whatever-edition seems sooo much better than the so-called "industry standards" that the stores stock, Norton and McAffee?

Now I use Microsoft's free anti-virus and anti malware program. It is Microsoft Security Essentials. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ Seems to work fine so far, updates itself and you can schedule when to scan, plus it is always working in the background chacking incoming files, etc. I also use Advanced System Care from iobit.com to keep the registry clean and also checks for Malware. --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, Rob Robinson > > Great info Chuck, especially that Shields Up site.
