Toad Battery Charging - Curt Sprenger - 06-26-2010 14:53

Just finished building/installing a base plate for our 2007 Wrangler. Now on to the next phase. The Wrangler owners manual recommends disconnecting the batter when towing 4 down. My SMI brake unit uses the battery for the vacuum pump so disconnecting the battery is not a good option. I located this http://www.lslproducts.com/ToadChargePage.html
on the net. Anyone have experience with this unit? What have others done to keep the toad battery charged while going down the road?

Toad Battery Charging - Ralph L. Fullenwider - 06-26-2010 15:06

Hi Curt:

The center pin on a 7 pin set up is used to charge trailer batteries from
the Coach and can be used to trickle charge your toad. Check the wiring
diagram in the files, it is a good source of info.

Toad Battery Charging - Fred Hulse - 06-26-2010 15:17

Hi Curt
Haven't used any add-on towed chargers at all. The Dakota we bought calls for removing the battery cable also, but haven't done so.
I would think that unless you are going to drive for 8 or 12 hours at a time, the idea of charging the car towedbattery seems unnecessary.
Although that lsl toad charge does look sensible and practical if one sees the need.

I would want to understand why they want
the battery disconnected. For most vehicles disconnecting the battery is required
because you have to leave the ignition on when towing four down to the unlock
the steering. With all the electronics in modern vehicles this will drain the
battery in 5-6 hours. Most connectors have power on pin #7 to charge the
battery in a towed vehicle.

I disconnect my battery because I don't want the airbags to deploy if I have too stomp on the brakes too quickly. I'm not sure they will deploy but I'm not going to risk it.
