PowerTech CD8000 Generator Lesson Learned - bberic35 - 07-08-2010 09:11

Installed new diesel generator in our coach in January 2001. Current hours on
the unit are 1400. It's been a quiet, reliable unit until now. Noted gradual
increase in vibration over past several months. On trip to Rockport Rally
started hearing a load tapping noise from the generator but couldn't locate the
source. Squirrel cage radiator fan finally flew apart and high temperature
shutdown tripped due to lack of cooling.

PowerTech repair shop knew what had happened as soon as I described the problem.
Rubber engine mounts under the Kabota diesel driver had deteriorated and dropped
the engine down to where the radiator fan started hitting the housing. Shop
pulled the unit out of the coach, replaced engine mounts, radiator hoses,
generator bearings, v-belt and put her back in for $960.

Lesson learned is if you have a PowerTech, BB factory preferred on late model
coaches, watch your generator hours and listen for vibration increase. PM on
the engine mounts could save you time, trouble and money.
